Insider’s Pinot Noir, If You’ve Never Tasted Byron Kosuge’s wines, you MUST try this!
Those of you who are in the know with some of California’s top Pinot Noirs may have come across a name “Byron Kosuge” before. Byron Kosuge is one of my all-time favorite Cali Pinot Noir winemakers, and has developed a loyal cult following. After 15 years as a winemaker at Saintsbury (with William Knuttel, Dick Ward, and David Graves) and a close mentorship with the legends Gary Pisoni (Pisoni Vineyards) and David Hirsch (Hirsch Vineyards), Byron set out on his own, focusing on his undying love and appreciation for Pinot Noir. You may have heard of his wines under his B. Kosuge label, which are down in my personal collection. McIntyre Vineyards is one of his other personal projects that has developed a very loyal and exlusive cult following, stationed out of the Santa Lucia Highlands (home to Roar, Kosta Browne, Pisoni, and August West). Those in the know, know the wines. And those who aren’t need to try them. They are blue chip caliber and rival California’s finest. McIntyre’s Pinot Noir possesses deep, dark colors and refined bouquets that evolve with aeration or time in the bottle. Noteworthy aromatics include raspberry, cherry, plum, spice, cardamom, molasses, forest floor and earth. Rich, powerful and expansive, the wines are galvanized by natural acidity and firm, seamless tannins. This is hardcore California Pinot, drinking like a dream, and aging to perfection. Decanter Magazine on 2014 as a vintage: “The real success story in 2014 was Pinot Noir, whether it is from Mendocino, Sonoma or Santa Cruz Mountains. The wines are deep, supple and site-expressive, structured around ripe tannins and bright acidity. Indeed, for Pinot Noir this is a five-star vintage, potentially the best since 1994.”
