My favorite wine region in Spain is Ribera del Duero, the land of big reds that rival the finest in the world. The finest are expensive, Pingus and Vega Sicilia comes to mind that sell for $400 to a $1000 a bottle. 2014 was a strong vintage in Ribera, Javier Ausas, technical director of Vega Sicilia loves 2014 calling the vintage powerful and ripe, a cross between 2010 and 2011.

Today I bring you one of the all time great values from Ribera del Duero, the wine got a huge 94pts by Wine Spectator and is priced at $29.99. The 2014 Valderiz is quite simply a great wine at a great price. Winemaker is Isaac Fernandez who's uncle is the great Mariano Garcia, who made Vega Sicilia for 28 vintages and is a living legend. Isaac is considered the next generation's rock star. He also makes San Roman in Toro which is a huge favorite of our customers. Since the 2003 vintage of Valderiz, the wine has score 90pts or more by the Wine Spectator, an amazing accomplishment of consistent excellence, year in year out. We have a one time shot on this wine. Greatness in the bottle, a tremendous buy!

Bodegas y Vinedas Valderiz S.L. is located in Roa, in the heart of Ribera del Duero Spain, about 100 miles north of Madrid and represents 7 generations of vine growers. The vineyards consist of 60 ha planted by Tomas Esteban and 10 ha planted by his father in 1932. They are spread across 35 parcels, each with different soils, made up of the traditional low bush and trellis. All vines were grafted from the original vineyards planted almost 100 years ago.

In 1980, the head of the family, Tomas made the most out of his plots of land in Ribera del Duero. The vineyards began to take shape over the next 10 years with the efforts and devotion of his sons Juan and Ricardo Esteban. Bodegas y Vinedos Valderiz came into being in 1997, and it is now one of the most widely recognized wineries in the Ribera del Duero.

The family is currently one of the forerunners in organic agriculture in the Ribera del Duero area. The total absence of herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers is the vineyard's distinctive trademark.

Today's wine has been scored by Wine Spectator since 2003, since its inaugural vintage it has never gotten less than 90 pts, 2014 is their highest score so far. The person responsible for such high scores is Isaac Fernandez, one of the new winemaking prodigies from Spain.

Isaac Fernandez, who has spent more than 25 years producing some of the best wines in the Ribera del Duero seeks to respect the identity of each vineyard and to nurture wines that balance power, finesse and purity with the capacity to age.

Isaac is one of the team of winemakers working at Mariano Garcia's family bodega, Mauro, located in Tudela del Duero. (Mariano Garcia is perhaps Spain's greatest winemaker, with thirty vintages at Vega Sicilia under his belt, he is arguably one of the finest winemakers in the world). Isaac is Mariano's nephew and great winemaking clearly seems to run in the family.

Today's wine is made from 95% Tinta del Pais (Tempranillo); 5% Albillo. Fruit is sourced from Esteban's vineyards, with vines averaging 25 years old. Soil is comprised of boulder, round river stones, and sand with a subsoil of clay, sand, and limestone.

50% old bush vines, 50% trellised vines.

WINEMAKER'S NOTES: The fermentation process is very gentle without intensive extraction, in 50% stainless steel tanks and 50% oak barrel with indigenous yeast.

Aging: 24 months 80% French oak, 20% American oak, in 60% new and 40% one year old barrels. Unfiltered, unfined.

TASTING NOTES: 94 pts. Wine Spectator: "Dense and muscular, yet graceful, this red balances ripe blackberry and cassis flavors with savory black olive, bitter chocolate and mineral notes. The firm tannins are well integrated, and lively acidity keeps this fresh through the spicy and floral finish. Drink now through 2028. 420 cases made."

Very dark, black currant color with rich and robust blue fruit on the nose. Full bodied with plums, vanilla and spice on the palate. Low acidity with nice balance and full ripe tannins on the finish.
