Washington State excels at growing Bordeaux varietals, especially Cabernet and Merlot, which are the two main grapes in Bordeaux, which is the epicenter of wine for the world. Because of its similar terroir and climate, Washington State is able to produce big and powerful red wines, which have excellent longevity, two staples of Bordeaux reds. The difference is that Washington State red wines can be approached at an early age and can be found for pennies on the dollar when compared to Bordeaux. The 2012 Waterbrook Cabernet Reserve from the Columbia Valley is a stunning example of this style.

For under $20 and from a 95 point rated vintage (Wine Spectator) this is a spectacular opportunity, one that should not be missed. It scored 90 points from Spectator which called the wine, “sleek and inviting.” It also noted that it is already drinking well and has another 5 years in the cellar. This is a Reserve, so not only is it comprised of the vineyard’s best fruit, but it also spends a full 2 years in oak, adding to its complexity and richness. The 2012 Washington vintage was huge – one of the best in the state’s history and the highest scoring since 2007.

2012 scored 94 points from Wine Advocate and 95 from Spectator, which noted that 2012 provided, “ideal conditions that produced powerful wines with elegance.”

Founded in 1984 as Walla Walla's fourth founded winery, Waterbrook is known for fruit-forward, food-friendly wines--primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. With more than 150 combined “Best Buys” and critical scores of 90 points or higher, Winemaker John Freeman works with our outstanding vineyards in the Walla Walla Valley and throughout the greater Columbia Valley. Whether touring Washington Wine Country or opening a bottle of Waterbrook wine, as Freeman says, "This is what Washington tastes like." Born in San Francisco and raised in Napa Valley, John Freeman was destined to be in the wine industry. John's initial work in California included seven years at Franciscan Vineyards and an additional five spent as the Cellar Master at Miner Family.

Winemaker's Notes: Bold and rich with developed aromatics of blackberry, cherry, cedar, leather and cocoa powder. The palate continues with deep blackberry jam, huckleberry and black currant. The oak structure guides the way to lingering cocoa powder on the finish.
