The warmer weather changes our patterns; as we spend more time
outside with friends and family. Wool sweaters and boots are stowed away,
replaced by golf shirts and flip flops. Our eating and wine-drinking habits
change too. Our palates crave easy drinking wines, crisp whites and round and
approachable red wines with lush, soft fruit. The wines we drink in the spring
pair magnificently with the lighter fare – shell fish, salads, grilled chicken
and cold soup.
With these changes upon us, after a long and nasty winter for
many, we jumped on the 2013 La Legua Garnacha from Cigales, Spain. This wine
over-delivers and at $12.99 in a case, this is a wine you will toast all season

techniques. This is one of the reasons, the house and the region is on the up
in the eyes wine drinkers, especially those seeking high QPR returns. The
winemakers are committed to offering quality wines which form part of the Cigales
Denomination of Origin (D.O.), with a character and personality of their own.
To achieve this, their wines are produced exclusively with painstakingly
cultivated and carefully selected grapes from the Estate of La Legua.
La Legua’s vineyards and winery are located on the Finca de La
Legua, a family-owned estate that lies at a distance of 6 kilometers, or one
league, from Valladolid and from the towns of Fuensaldaña, Mucientes, Cigales
and CabezĂłn. Pioneering estates like La Legua are now taking advantage of
low-yielding, old vines and modern wine-making methods to produce excellent
value reds from Tempranillo and Garnacha.

Tasting Notes: The 2013
Garnacha is an un-oaked, young and fresh version of Garnacha from Cigales that
possesses an exuberant nose of herbs and spices and sweet hints of red berries,
licorice and floral undertones. The palate is light, with very good acidity,
fine tannins and herbal sensations. Ideal with food. 8,000 bottles
produced. Drink now-2017.
Vineyard’s Tasting Notes: A medium cherry colored wine.
Intense and clean on the nose with violet candy tones and a spicy and floral
background. It bursts onto the palate with an abundance of expressive
blackberry and red licorice, displaying lovely soft tannins and juicy acidity
which leads to a refreshing finish.
