RATINGS: 90pts Wine Spectator; 92pts Wine & Spirits

Our capital comprises family owned vineyards on the hillsides in the warm "South of South Tyrol" Tramin and outlying areas on the western slopes of the Adige Valley where vineyards face south east and enjoy the gentle morning sun, and Mazon on the eastern slopes which face south west and bask in the powerful late afternoon sunlight.

Large numbers of winegrowers have abandoned the hillsides for the lower slopes and valley floor where vineyards are far easier and cheaper to tend. We have resisted this temptation in the knowledge that the very finest wines come from sloping and steep vineyards.

Steep vineyards expose the vines to more sunlight, rainwater drains away quickly and the "guyot" trellising method, which restricts the yield per vine, results in finer quality. When my father introduced this training system in 1962 nobody in South Tyrol could believe it.

In spite of this we have not completely abandoned the traditional South Tyrolean pergola system, which works well for local varieties which grow vigorously and need room to expand. Very old pergola trained vines yield tiny quantities of grapes and can still produce superb quality, as revealed by our Pinot Noir from the Barthenau vineyard at Mazon, and our Gewurztraminer produced in the Kolbenhof estate at Soll above Tramin, both of which come from pergola trained vines..

TASTING NOTES: Wine & Spirits 92 points- Perched at 1,200 feet on a western slope just above the village of Tramin, the Kolbenhof vineyard enjoys warm morning sunlight and cool evening winds, allowing the grapes to ripen well while retaining acidity. The wine's floral and spice aromas lead to lush flavors of pineapple, mango and apricot, warming and rich yet still fresh, with a lingering buzz of clove and allspice on the finish. An elegant gewurztraminer for pork tenderloin with a spicy apricot glaze.

Wine Spectator 90 points- Tightly knit and minerally, this dry version shows a vibrant palate of ground ginger, pink peppercorn, kiwifruit, lime granita and candied grapefruit zest. Long and intense on the finish. Drink now through 2023. 3,500 cases made.
