I have a tiny allocation of one of the finest new Chardonnays I have tasted this year. The wine comes from one of the young rising stars of California Winemaking. Gavin Chanin is truly a Rockstar of wine. If you love great Chardonnay, greats like Paul Hobbs, DuMol, Littorai, Pahlmeyer, you need to grab some of this. This is the next great Cali Chardonnay.

At just 27 years old, Gavin Chanin brings a depth of experience to his winemaking that even veterans would envy. While at UCLA, Chanin, who had grown up in a wine-loving family, took the fall quarter off each year from his studies to work harvest in California. By the time he was 21 years old, he had already worked three harvests with two seminal Central Coast winemakers, Bob Lindquist of Qupé and Jim Clendenen of Au Bon Climat, at Santa Maria’s famed Bien Nacido Vineyard. He also worked harvests in South Africa and New Zealand, and traveled extensively in Burgundy and Italy. He launched his own label, Chanin Wine Co., in 2007. By the time he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from UCLA in 2009, winemaking became a full time endeavor for Chanin as Assistant Winemaker at both Qupé and Au Bon Climat.

Even so, Chanin has indeed attracted his own critical attention. He was named one of Forbes’ “30 under 30” in 2011, a “winemaker to watch” by San Francisco Chronicle in 2012, one of Food & Wine’s “winemakers of the year” in 2012, and was featured in Wine Enthusiast magazine’s “40 under 40” tastemakers in the wine industry for 2013. A recent article in Wine & Spirits prominently featured Chanin as a leader in “the shape of Pinot Noir and Chardonnays to come.”

Today’s wine comes from Chanin’s new venture with businessman Bill Price. Bill Price owns some of the finest single vineyards in California including Durrell, Trip, Dupont, Gap’s Crown and Rita’s Crown Vineyard. He is also the chairman of both Kosta Browne and Gary Farrell, two of the best blue chip producers in California. Bill and Gavin are focusing on small production, single vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from some of the finest vineyards for these grapes in California.

Voted by Bloomberg As One Of The Best 50 under 50 wines in the world

Chanin Wine Company’s 2016 Los Alamos Vineyard Chardonnay is an absolutely head-turning wine. Aromas of coconut flakes, orange zest and yellow apples. The palate has a crystalline focus, weaving through flavors of honeycomb, red apples, oyster brine and coarse sea salt. The finish is magnetic and expansive, and this will continue to be a stunner for at least a decade.
