Some time ago at a Tres Bicchieri tasting in NYC, I came
across an absolutely fabulous Italian wine - The Tenuto Mazzolino Pinot Noir
from Lombardy in Northern Italy. The
Tenuto Pinot, a five time winner of Italy’s most prestigious wine designation,
The Gamberro Rosso Tre Bicchieri Award, has since become a Grapes customer
favorite and is consistently one of our top sellers. So, when I learned that the man behind this
outstanding wine - a thirteenth generation French winemaker named Jean Francois
Coquard, who grew up amongst the family vineyards in the Beaujolais region of
Burgundy- has now after 15 years with Tenuto, returned to his native France to
produce the Burgundian varietals of his family heritage, I knew I absolutely
had to have a taste. I was not
The standout wine that I am bringing to you today is the
Coquard Morgon “Les Charmes” 2016 . By far one of the most elegant expressions
of the varietal I have tasted in recent memory, the Morgon les Charmes easily
holds its own with wines twice the cost.
Located at the heart of the Beaujolais Cru, the Morgan Appellation is the
second largest after Brouilly. The Morgon is 100% Gamay Fruit manually
harvested from forty year old vines, with a minimum of 2 weeks temperature
controlled maceration and Fermentation. Its color displays intense ruby red and
purple tints, with a heady aroma of rich blueberry fruit, plum and subtle
spice. The fresh, medium bodied palate
of crushed strawberries and silky tannins, makes this wine is the perfect
accompaniment to a plate of Charcuterie and some melting Roquefort. Give it a few minutes to open up and it will
continue to surprise and delight you to the last drop. 2016 is a key vintage
release in France, which means it’s a great year. This is a great red for the
fall that cannot be beat at the price. This is a buy by the case!
This is hard core quality with nice depth and has the
substance to age. Fresh black cherry fruit getting darker with black fruits.
Kirsch developing in the glass. The palate is fleshy oozing red fruits,
strawberry and cherry, with hints of Asian spice and I loved the depth on the
finish. Give the wine a 10 minute breathe and it opens up, has superb drinkability,
a crowd pleaser that will flow when opened.
