“As to the 2015s, this is a truly sensational vintage that should not be missed by any Rhône lover out there. Let me say that one more time: 2015 is a truly sensational vintage.” – Robert Parker

The world’s greatest wine connoisseurs have spoken and given their verdict on the superb quality of the 2015 bottlings across Europe and while there is no doubt that the vintage will go in history as one of the greatest we have seen in modern history and probably in our lives we are also aware that the best houses will command prices that have never seen before.

Luckily, today’s wine comes from what I call “the gateway to France”, the Southern Rhone. This is one of the few regions in France where you can still find remarkable values at the price point and today’s pick it’s a perfect example of that. If you need more affirmation, just read Parker’s score on the wine. I find it astonishing knowing this wine sells under $20 a bottle!

Domaine Jaume is located in the small town of Vinsobres, northeast of Chateauneuf du Pape appellation. However, what makes Vinsobres stand out from its neighboring towns is the fact that their continuous pursue for high quality wines gained the town its own appellation in 2006. Antonio Galloni has written about it on his “Southern Rhône’s Value Play” article has rated it as one of the regions to watch.

The estate was founded in 1905 and today it’s run by 5th generation winemakers Richard and Pascal Jaume. Jaume’s founder played a fundamental role in the creation of France’s AOC system. In 2003, the Jaumes purchased Domaine Courtois, a 30-hectare estate that sits on terraced hills. Vinsobres higher altitude results in a cooler microclimate that delivers a dark fruit profile with extended layering and a strong sense of minerality. These are vineyards that despite being in the Southern Rhone have a strong resemblance to those in Northen Rhone.

These vineyards are made up primarily of Grenache, along with some Syrah and a small amount of Mourvèdre. All the wines are fermented in stainless steel tank, before being moved to a mix of cement vat or barrel, depending on the cuvées, for their malolactic fermentation and subsequent élevage. All blending is done right after the malo, and most of the wines are aged for just 12 to 14 months.

91 pts. Parker: If you can really find this wine, buy it. The 2015 Côtes du Rhône la Source is a full-bodied, ripe and beautifully fruited effort. It has fabulous purity, lots of black cherry, currants, peppery herbs and licorice aromas and flavors, and full-bodied richness that never comes across as heavy or cumbersome. Made from 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah, from a higher elevation parcel, destemmed and aged in stainless steel, it’s a smoking value!
