offer comes from one of Napa’s most notable winemaking families, the Wagner
family. To be more specific, the wine is the result of Jon Bolta and Charlie
Wagner, owner and winemaker for labels like Mer Soleil and Silver.
Wagner grew up in Rutherford – and he is named after his grandfather, Charles
F. Wagner, co-founder of Caymus Vineyards. Following in his grandfather’s
footsteps, Charlie spent most of his spring and summer breaks working in the
vineyards or the cellar at Caymus. When he was 16 years old, he began his
winemaking career while working on the bottling line of Caymus Vineyards. In
1988, after Chuck Wagner (Charlie’s dad) saw his son’s passion for white wines;
he decided to have Jon Bolta as his son’s mentor.
Bolta acquired his winemaking skills by
learning on the job. He joined Caymus Vineyards in 1983, starting in the
bottling line, and moving up through the ranks to the cellar and the vineyards.
By 1988, he was already responsible for producing all the white wines from
the house. At that same time, Charlie Wagner Sr. appointed Bolta to be the
creator of a new nontraditional white wine blend that would first be released
for the 1989 vintage. The name of this wine; Conundrum (which refers
to a confusing or difficult problem).
The idea behind the wine was to make a
full-flavored fruit wine, but that also had complexity and balance. A wine that
could de drunk either as an aperitif or be served with the local fare.
Blending wines was almost unthinkable when Conundrum White was born more than
25 years ago but since then, this wine has attracted a loyal following. This is
because the wine keeps reinventing itself. While the exact blend differs
vintage after vintage, the five grapes including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc,
Semillon, Muscat, and Viognier make up for a wine that is amazingly versatile,
with intriguing tropical notes and natural acidity.
Today’s wine, the 2015
Conundrum White is the versatile
white wine. The wine can be enjoyed while relaxing at the beach or having Thai
or Vietnamese food for dinner. Sourced from the family’s estate vineyard in
Mendocino, Napa and Sonoma counties. The wine is both exotic and bright, with
luring scents of apricot, pear and honeysuckle, even orange and lemon pie.
Initial sweetness is balanced by natural acidity, and a slight hint of oak that
plays with flavors of peach, apple and citrus.
