"The 2012 harvest in Napa was marked by superb quality and abundant production. The Pinot Noirs are soft, supple and silky, with a flavor profile that leans heavily towards the red fruit end of the spectrum. The 2012s drink well right out of the gate." Galloni

This wine delights the palate and the Winery Waterstone has built a great reputation for supplying incredibly undervalued wines from the leading wine regions of California.

As wine lovers there is nothing that we enjoy more than finding a bottle of wine that over delivers at its price point; but when we refer to the finicky Pinot Noir grape this is something that is rarely seen; more so when the wine is under the $20 range. This is why today's selection is an unbelievable deal that needs to be purchased in massive quantities.

The wine is the 2012 Waterstone Pinot Noir, a 100% single varietal wine that was sourced from the finest vineyards in Carneros. Waterstone Winery is the project of Brent Shortridge who in 2000 opened the estate with the simple concept of creating luxury wines at affordable prices. The estate is located in Carneros AVA, the only appellation that is shared by two major wine regions, Napa and Sonoma. Carneros is influenced by the maritime breezes and fog from the San Pablo Bay producing the region's finest Pinot Noir. Wineries like Aubert, Etude, Patz & Hall and Ramey all own vineyards planted to Pinot Noir here.

Brent Shortridge has over 30 years of experience in winemaking and holds a degree in biochemistry. Shortridge was the winemaker at Buena Vista winery when he met his mentor Andre Tschelistcheff, who he worked with for 10 years until the former retired. Andre became the first American winemaker ever to earn a 100 point score from Robert Parker and was named #5 most influential wine leader by Wine Spectator. After leaving Buena Vista, Shortridge immersed himself in the wine country community as marketing director for the Napa Valley Vintners Association.

The 2012 Waterstone Pinot Noir was produced from grapes of 3 single vineyards: the Diamond Vineyard in central Carneros, the Champlin Creek Vineyard in Western Carneros (Champlin Creek features volcanic soils resulting in complex wines with deep color, excellent tannins and layered aromas of dark fruit, sage and violet, MacRostie Winery produces a $60 bottle from this vineyard), and the Truchard Vineyard in northeastern Carneros (this vineyard is planted with both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Nickel & Nickel sources his chardonnay from here).

TASTING NOTES: The grapes were hand harvested, destemmed and whole berry fermented in open top vats, where they underwent manual punch downs to provide maximum flavor and minimum harsh tannins. Following fermentation, the wine was transferred to small French oak barrels for 13 months. The barrels were 35% new and 65% used (1 year old). Prior to bottling, the wine received minimal filtration and fining to preserve the fresh berry flavors.

Dark plums, cherry, cola and leather are present in this wine's aroma. The soft vanilla toned from the oak blend perfectly with the intense fruit core and soft tannins, providing complexity and balance and leading to a lingering finish.

"This full bodied wine has an elegant bouquet that invites, before pomegranate, plum and orange peel figure in on the palate. Powerful on the finish, it features hints of vanilla around the leathery texture."
