The Only Italian White To Make The Spectator Top 100

The great white wines of Northern Italy make some of the greatest white wines made in Europe. Hailing from Friuli famous for their bright elegant complex whites comes the 2014 Torre Rosazza Pinot Grigio is drinking superbly and is perfect for Spring and Summer ahead. The wine got 90pts by Wine Spectator and was included on their Top 100 wines of the year. This is a huge honor for the wine! The consulting Winemaker is the great Riccardo Cottarella one of the greatest winemakers in Italy today. Full time winemaker is Filiputti Walter who worked and made wine for the great Marco Felluga. If you love Italian white or looking for a great white for Spring and Summer this is a must! You have found your wine!

Torre Rosazza lies in the heart of an area dedicated to vine growing since ancient times, the Colli Friuli Orientali DOC, the easternmost appellation in Italy. Its name derives from 'Turis Rusaceae' or Tower of Roses and the estate includes the 18th century Palazzo De' Marchi now converted into a winery with cellar and guest rooms.

The property is centered on two natural amphitheaters of Eocene marl that are terraced and well exposed to the sun. Torre Rosazza covers a total of 110 hectares of which 90 are planted to vines in a truly prime location surrounded by the top producers of the region. An altitude of between 100 and 250 meters above sea level and a position South of the Julian Pre Alps, no more than 20km from the mild Adriatic coastline, makes Torre Rosazza ideal for grape ripening. The hillsides are terraced and the soil contains a mix of marl and sandstone. Poor in nutrients, yet compact and with good mineral content, the soil provides perfect vine growing conditions.

Torre Rosazza was acquired in 1979 by Genagricola, who immediately started to study and zone 90 ha of vines. Along with the help of Filiputti Walter (winemaker) they embarked on a journey to make Torre Rosazza in has become today.

Filiputti Walter was the first person to introduce French techniques into Friuli by using French oak barrels for white and red wines. He studied oenology in Bordeaux and Beaune; his first job was in 1975 where he was assistant winemaker for Marco Felluga. (Felluga winery). He also has consulted for some of the most important houses in the region like Ronchi Cialla, Leon, Ronco del Gnemiz, Borgo Conventi, Vazzoler, Spessa Castle, Col Sandago in veneto and I Balzini in Tuscany.

Since 2014, Riccardo Cottarella is overseeing all phases of the production process, from the vineyards to the winery. Cottarella consults for 53 other wineries all over Italy. Most of them are in center Italy, but 6 of them are located in Bordeaux. The grapes are picked by hand and whole grapes are placed in the press, where they are softly squeezed. Traditional white wine vinification in stainless steel vats at controlled temperature is carried out followed by partial malolactic fermentation. The wine aged on the lees for about 6 months in steel tanks.

TASTING NOTES:90 pts. Wine Spectator- "A mouthwatering white, well knit and aromatic, this offers a lively mix of Honeycrisp apple, grapefruit, guava, star fruit and nectarine flavors, with accents of honeycomb, smoke and candied ginger. Lingering and creamy finish. Drink now through 2022." 3,500 cases made.

Straw yellow with golden reflections, made this debut on the nose with pronounced floral scents that turn then to the fruity, recalling hints of apple and ripe pear. The palate is soft with good body and with a pleasantly citrus, which gives freshness to the drink.

Pairings:

Highly versatile when dining, this wine is an excellent match for white meats and flavorful fish like tuna. It combines well with fish based first courses and hearty bean soups. Finally, it's perfect when enjoyed with aged cold cuts.
