“I am always such a big fan of Andrea Cortonesi's work. Like his previous releases, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino shows an uncanny sense of continuity and consistency with past releases. This steady stylistic focus is one of the best reasons to buy Uccelliera Brunello. The wine is dark and rich in appearance. Fruit from this vintage was smaller than usual and Andrea jokes that during the 2012 growing season you could hardly call it "Sangiovese Grosso," the name of the Sangiovese clone used in Montalcino. It is normally characterized by larger berry size, but not in this warm and dry vintage. Fruit was concentrated and smaller instead. The wine's explosive flavor profile demonstrates this fact. Blackberry and dark fruit segues to spice, tobacco and balsam herb.” WA 96pts

Uccelliera is one of the most popular producers of Brunello in the US. Whatever we offer from the house sells out fast. Their rich round style make them a huge favorite. The wines comes from the southern part of the Brunello zone, slightly warmer resulting in richer, more concentrated Brunello and no-body does it better than this house. Andrea Cortonesi vineyards are in one of the sweet spots of the zone, Castelnuovo dell’Abate. He is a superstar in one of the greatest red wine regions there is. This wine is all about spectacular drinking pleasure of the highest order.

Andrea Cortonesi is undeniably one of the best producers in Montalcino. He is the owner and winemaker of Uccelliera. He was born as the only son of a farmer and grew up closely assisting his father in the vineyards in Montalcino. In 1986 after working as winemaker at Ciacci Piccolomini, he bought a tiny amount of older vines in the South, these vineyards were part of the Ciacci estate which can trace their winemaking lineage in this area as far back as the 17th century The Uccelliera estate was at once part of neighboring Ciacci Piccolomini until 1986, when winemaker Andrea Cortonesi purchased it from his friends and former employers. After refining his trade as cellar master for Ciacci, Andrea ventured out on his own with the formation of Uccelliera. His first vintage was 1991 with the production of a mere 500 bottles.

Tucked away in the southeast corner of the appellation in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, (where average temperatures are warmer) the soil here is loose and stony gives the wines of Uccelliera a rich and ripe expression, vintage after vintage. Two hectares adjacent to Ciacci’s famous ‘Pianrosso’ vineyard were recently added to this boutique estate, bringing the total to a mere six hectares.

The vineyard is planted at various elevations spread across three tiers. The lower level at 150 meters above sea level sees heavier calcareous marl clay soils. The geology at 250 meters above sea level sees a mix of clay and sandy soils with a much larger presence of limestone and mineral. The highest vineyards at 350 meters above sea level consist of limestone Galestro rocks mixed into primarily clay soils. These soil differences give Andrea many primary colors to mix on his proverbial painter's pallet. He blends fruit from the various sites - with darker more concentrated flavors from the heavier soils and elegant aromas from the limestone-rich areas - to shape the style he wants to achieve in each successive vintage.
