La Serena Brunello just beat out all others. Their Brunello rivals the finest produced and the 2013 La Serena Brunello is a wine of the vintage. A native of neighboring wine area San Gimignano, enologist Paolo Caciorgna is at the helm at La Serena, a 22 acre estate located in the northeastern corner of Montalcino's wine zone. The property has been owned by the Mantengoli family since the 1930s, but wine production didn't begin at La Serena until 1988; today about 15 acres are under vine. Planted at an altitude of 1,150 feet, in clay and calcareous based soils, the vineyards benefit from long days for ripening and cooler nights that preserve acidity. What began as a one hectare farm has since grown into nine hectares, with about six of those under vine, dedicated exclusively to Sangiovese Grosso for Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino. They are in the zone of Torrenieri which is in the northeast corner of Montalcino at about 400 meters above sea level. The soil here is not as compact as most in the area, giving wines that are structured but perhaps more approachable in youth than their neighbors. La Serena's Brunello di Montalcino comes from 17 year old vineyards near the famed Montesoli Cru. The vineyards, planted at 350 meters above sea level on clayey, calcareous soils, benefit from longer ripening periods and higher levels of acidity than their lower altitude counterparts. Our price is excellent at $41.99 making the wine is a no brainer buy. Treat yourself a truly great example of one of the world's leading red wine regions.

TASTING NOTES: Enticing from the first aromas of fresh cherry, violet and spice, this supple red is balanced and expressive. Matches an elegant frame with a firm backbone of tannins and lively acidity. Very persistent on the long, detailed aftertaste. Best from 2020 through 2036.
