Since time immemorial Nebbiolo has been the most highly prized vine and the wine growing emblem of Alba and the Langa, and when it is matched with a great wine making terroir it is capable of expressing itself at sublime levels in wines of remarkable personality, intense bouquet, great smooth tannins, and outstanding possibilities of evolution and resistance over time.
The members of the Giuseppe Mascarello family have been growing wines for more than a century and a half, first as farmers running the Manescotto estate in the village of La Morra for the marchesa Giulia Colbert Faletti di Barolo, and then on their own property since the late 1800s.
Today, Mauro Mascarello is the last remaining giant of the great Barolo generation that included Giovanni Conterno and Bartolo Mascarello. Mauro has been the winemaker for the Giuseppe Mascarello estate since the late 1960s, succeeding his father, Giuseppe, and his grandfather, Maurizio, both legends in their time. And like them, Mauro is a traditionalist dedicated to long fermentations and aging in old botti. But Mauro has also made important changes, not the least of which was the creation of a single Barolo from the great Monprivato vineyard in 1970. Prior to that year, his family had always made their towering Barolos and Barolo Riservas by blending Monprivato fruit with grapes from other sites.

TASTING NOTES: A mix of chocolate, cherry, earth and tar flavors is allied to a dense structure in this red. Initially tannic, this takes several hours of aeration to reveal its true personality. Cherry, leather, licorice and spice flavors marry harmoniously with the silky texture. Excellent length. Best from 2022 through 2038. From Italy.-B.S.
