Vatan Tinta de Toro is made with the Tinta de Toro grape, an ancient clone of Tempranillo that is native to D.O. Toro. It is because of this noble grape that the wines of Toro were famous in the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries.

The grapes for Vatan come from a vineyard planted in 1943, with some grapes within this vineyard that were planted in 1910. The soils are very sandy, intermixed with alluvial gravel. Six to nine feet below the surface, there is a red clay subsoil, which acts as a reservoir of moisture, which is crucial in this arid region. After fermentation in stainless steel, it is transferred to new French oak barrels where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and is aged for 22 months.

TASTING NOTES: The Wine Advocate "I also tasted the just bottled 2013 Vatan, from a completely different vintage that despite the cooler growing season, achieved 2% more alcohol than the 2012 (this is 16% and remained with 3.5 grams unfermented sugar). The wine is ripe and hedonistic, juicier and fresher than the 2012, and despite having more alcohol it feels much more balanced. It is still a baby with plenty of puppy fat to be rendered by the time in bottle. There are some lactic aromas, ripe black berry fruit and integrated oak scents; it has plenty of spices and some underbrush hints. The palate is full bodied with glossy tannins; it is juicy, chewy and nicely balanced within its XXL size. The velvety tannins make it approachable now, but it should develop more complexity in bottle, and for sure it should have a long life ahead. It is a nice representation of a powerful Toro style, and at this quality level, the price is quite good."

Vinous / Antonio Galloni "Dark purple. Fresh black and blue fruits, pipe tobacco and candied violet on the highly perfumed, smoke accented nose. Fleshy, seamless and broad in the mouth, offering intense blueberry and cherry vanilla flavors and an exotic touch of Indian spices. The spicy quality carries strongly through the finish, which clings with excellent tenacity and smooth, building tannins. The yield here was under a ton per acre."
