The family of Catena are leaders in the great wines of Argentina. Nicholas
Catena with Paul Hobbs were instrumental in establishing the style of Argentine
reds and focusing on the Malbec grape to best showcase the countries wines.
Today’s wine comes from the son of Nicholas, Ernesto Catena and his great
Winery Tikal. The wine is the 2013 Tikal Amorio, a Malbec based blend
that is absolutely exquisite at the price. If This was from Napa, Bordeaux or
Tuscany, we are talking triple the price. The wine got a huge 93pts by Parker
and 2013 is a great vintage for Mendoza, the vintage as a whole receiving
95pts by Parker.
grapes come from the high elevation biodynamically farmed estate vineyards in
Vista Flores which is in the Uco Valley in Mendoza. This is one of the sweet
spots in Mendoza, Many consider Vista Flores to be the best terroir in Mendoza.
Ernesto Catena’s passion and what he focuses on is Malbec based blends which he
feels best showcases the grapes potential and it’s adaptability. The name Tikal
refers to the spiritual Mayan ruins in Guatemala and is also Ernesto’s son’s
name. Ernesto is an extremely passionate hedonistic person and it comes through
in his wines. His winemaker Alejandro Kuschnaroff is considered one of the
greatest minds in wine in Argentina. This wine displays Argentina’s wine
greatness offering a great full bodied red at a fraction of the price of wine
countries. Great wine, big score, low price and will fly.
The 2012 Amorío, a wine that used to be pure Malbec, is now a blend of 60%
Malbec and 40% Cabernet Franc making it different from previous vintages. It
has a good mix of Atlantic and Mediterranean characters, ripe cherries and some
herbal aromas with tons of black peppercorns and develops the telltale violets
with some air and time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with lively
acidity mixing some earthy, graphite-like flavors with acidic strawberries that
denote good balance. 63,000 bottles.
