We love the spirit of this winemaker, Vega Clara. When we met her, her passion for what she does was immediately apparent. She inherited the land for her wine from her grandfather, Mario, for whom the wine is named. That tract of land is a tiny 5 hectare property that runs contiguous to Vega Sicilia, one of Spain’s iconic wineries. An example of her feisty spirit is that she successfully lobbied the Ribera Appellation to recognize her blend of 75% Tempranillo and 25% Cabernet, both of which appear on the label. Her wines are tiny productions and sell out very quickly. We expect nothing less in 2012, which was an excellent 93 point rated vintage by Robert Parker.
Tasting Notes: Mario possesses a deep, rich aroma that’s perfectly balanced. It has a clean nose with outstanding fragrances of ripe forest berries and notes of sweet pepper. From the barrel, the wine has achieved very fine toasted and smoky characteristics with a hint of vanilla on both the nose and the palate.
