GOLD MEDAL WINNNING PINOT NOIR FROM NEW ZEALAND

THIS IS A GAME CHANGER FROM PETER YEALAND

NEW ZEALAND’S 2014 WINERY OF THE YEAR

WINE IS “PLUSH & SUPPLE” WITH A TERRIFIC FINISH

Huge quality for a small price is the key to this New Zealand Pinot. Wine Spectator Loved this value gem, scoring it 91 points. For just $18.99 it is a great fit for Pinot lovers looking for a break from California’s high priced wines. Vineyard owner Peter Yealand does things his own way, and you will be glad that he does.

Peter Yealands Pinot Noir 2014 Marlborough; New Zealand Regular: $22.99 Now: $18.99

91pts Spectator & Gold Medal Winner

New Zealand offers some of the best quality to price ratio Pinot Noirs in the world. While California and Burgundy prices soar, New Zealand’s remain remarkably low given the quality of their red wines, especially Pinot Noir. Peter Yealand, a renegade agri-entrepeneur makes tremendous wines and sustainability is a core value. His Pinot Noir for $18.99 will have you rethinking what great Pinot should cost!

Yealand’s winery is located within Marlborough’s Awatere Valley, which offers the all-important diurnal temperature shift, a large swing from daytime highs to evening lows. This extends the growing season for the grapes, and is critical for the always fussy Pinot Noir vines.

Not solely a winemaker or vineyard owner, Peter Yealands is one of New Zealand’s most successful entrepreneurs, with a focus on farming and wine. A self-described “Bloke for All Seasons” (the title of his autobiography), he has done it his way for decades and the results are undisputable. Wine is hardly is only success, in 1971 he was issued with New Zealand’s first marine farming license. Thanks to his efforts in designing innovative technologies and helping establish aquaculture in the region, marine farming now contributes $160 million a year to New Zealand’s export earnings. Given the success that agriculture has provided, Peter works incredibly hard to create sustainable practices – and his vineyards have become models by which all others should be judged. Opened August 2008, the winery (pictured) was built under the draft Green Building Code and was the first winery in the world to be accredited CarboNZeroCERT™ from inception.

With so much on his plate, Peter (left) has set the tone for his wines – sustainability and creativity and built a fabulous team. Chief Winemaker is Tamra Kelly – Washington (right), who learned her trade in Napa, Australia and Italy. Senior winemaker, Jeff Fyfe, studied in Burgundy and US – born Hannah Coulson jumped at the chance to work for Peter and moved 8000 miles from her Wisconsin home to become the vineyard’s oenologist.

Spectator’s Review & Tasting Notes: Plush and supple, with a juicy quality to the plum, raspberry and wild strawberry flavors. Fresh earth, cedar and spicy black licorice notes sneak in on the finish, along with a dried rose petal accent. Drink now through 2025. – 91 Points

Yealand’s Tasting Notes: The bouquet offers cherry aromas and a hint of savory spice. The palate is juicy with ripe fruit that lead into a supple, soft tannin finish. Very approachable now or cellar until 2019.
