I was really looking forward to the 2010 Prado Enea Gran Reserva, as I've seen a very good improvement in this cuvée in the last few vintages, and 2010 is one of the more-balanced vintages of recent times. This is the most classical among the wines in the portfolio, the one with the longer élevage, a little bit like the wines from yesteryear but with today's knowledge about vineyards and vinification/élevage. This has settled to a blend of approximately 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and the remaining 10% between Mazuelo and Graciano, from the cooler, higher-altitude vineyards, which means they only bottle it every two or three years. In recent years, 2007 and 2008 were not bottled. It ferments in small oak vats built by their own tonneliers, and they like to delay malolactic until the spring by opening the windows so the cold from outside comes into the winery. For the aging, each variety goes into separate barrels racked from newer to older barrels to complete some 36 months or three years. It has very healthy and balanced parameters, and that's what the wine feels like. It's still young. It's never a dark wine, more of a ruby or bright color, and it has a nose of youth, subtle and elegant. But the quality shows in the unbelievable elegance and harmony on the palate, where the tannins are very fine, the flavors are subtle but deep and the length is just phenomenal. This is only medium-bodied, with perfect ripeness and integrated acidity. This should have a very long life in bottle, especially as I had the chance to check the evolution of the 2004 next to this. 90,000 bottles were produced from 2010. The following vintages will be 2011, 2014 (a small bottling) and 2015. WA

The wonderfully silky texture with an added juiciness is what makes this wine so very special. The flawless and seamless nature to the wine is so impressive that it takes you breath away. Plenty of beautiful fruit but what mouthfeel. Drink now and forever. Suckling

Jeb Dunnuck 97 points - Moving to the reds, I was able to taste all of the components of the 2016 Chateauneuf-du-Pape and this will unquestionably be another terrific vintage from this estate. All of the samples had inky, purple colors, classic aromatics, good acidity and freshness, and balanced profiles. The Mourvedre, in particular, was beautiful..October/2017

Decanter 96 points - The nose is tightly wound for now, but shows fresh black fruits and an underlying herbal seam. It’s full-bodied but immediately lifted and fresh on the palate, with powerful fruit and a dense lattice of ripe tannins. It is beautifully textured, very straight in style, with great length and energy. It’s already very well integrated and balanced. Tight, refreshing, mineral and intense. A truly excellent Beaucastel..December/2017

Parker’s WA 97pts - No surprise, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape takes the quality of the Coudoulet and ratchets it up a notch (or two!). I tasted the preliminary blend from foudre and was blown away by its potential. At 35% Mourvèdre, 25% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 10% Counoise, 5% Cinsault and 10% other permitted varieties, it shows amazing purity in its scents of dark fruit and licorice, richness and weight without any excess of alcohol and a finish that goes on and on.

The extremely powerful, concentrated and rich 2009 1902 is named after the vintage when the centenary Cariñena vines were planted. They have been making small lots of this wine since 2004, but the 2009 is the first commercial release. Cariñena takes heat very well (2009 was certainly hot) and produces very powerful and concentrated wines. This has the character and rusticity of the Priorats from the 1990s and the finesse, elegance of the know-how acquired with years of experience. Wet slate, esparto grass, black cherries, damsons, clove, nutmeg, violets and loads of earthy aromas and flavors define this huge wine that will age forever and please the fans of powerful, concentrated reds. Very poetically, they define this vines as wise vines instead of old vines. Sadly only 850 bottles were produced, and the price reflects this scarcity. This makes the 2012 Doix seem light!

I love the currant and rosemary character of this wine. Some sage, too. Complex aromas that draw you in. Full body... a long and intense finish. The tannins are fantastic – so polished. Focused and beautiful. Mineral undertone with ash and hot stone highlighting the dark fruits. It goes on for minutes... a serious red all the way.

The 2015 Chardonnay Larry Hyde and Sons Vineyard is simply amazing with a level of intensity that is through the roof, strutting notes of lemon oil, candied ginger, pink grapefruit and orange blossom with touches of yuzu and brioche, plus a waft of green tea. Full-bodied, finely constructed, oily and yet with tons of zing, this is simply a blockbuster and a delicious one at that.

Mark Aubert continues to set the bar incredibly high for the world-class quality of his Burgundian-styled, remarkable Chardonnays, which come from relatively cool sites spread from Rutherford in Napa Valley to the far reaches of the Sonoma Coast. As I indicated last year, Aubert is at the top of his game, and it is hard to believe any Chardonnay winemaker in the world is turning out a half-dozen Chardonnays at this qualitative level year in and year out. He has had an incredible run of great success, after being mentored by none other than the reclusive and supremely talented Helen Turley when he took over the winemaking job at Peter Michael, then proceeded on to impressive sojourns at Colgin Estate as well as Tom Futo’s winery in Oakville.Parker, “I have consistently bought these wines since his first vintages, and I’ve been truly amazed at how long they evolve and last. I tend to drink them all relatively young, but I’ve been shocked by his early vintages, such as 2004, that are still incredibly vibrant and youthful.”

“The 2015s are all in the 15-15.3% alcohol range, which is normal for his wines. They were all extremely long-fermenting and have turned out to be as spectacular as what he achieved in previous vintages.”

The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is made predominately from Cabernet Sauvignon from Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper vineyard. It gives a very deep purple-black color and is redolent of crème de cassis, blueberry compote, Indian spices and crushed rocks with touches of black soil, cigar boxes and Provence herbs. The palate is built like a brick house with a solid frame of firm, fine-grained tannins and plenty of freshness supporting the generous black and blue fruits and beautiful spice layers, finishing on a lingering mineral note. 200 cases were made. Parker’s WA

Winery: The 2015 Carte Blanche Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% varietal makeup. Cabernet Sauvignon was farmed mainly at Oakville’s Missouri Hopper Vineyard owned by Andy Beckstoffer. A small amount of Cabernet from Las Posadas Vineyard on Howell Mountain was used in the final blend. A super complex nose leaps from the glass, showing dark and red fruits, cassis, graphite, and lead pencil. A broad palate opens to reveal black fruits, hint of red currant, and fresh tobacco leaf, all leading to a mile long silky finish. Enjoyable now with air and built for cellar aging.
