The Icardi
(“ee-car-dee”) farm and winery,
celebrating its 100th birthday
this year
, is located at the boundary between two of Italy's renowned
vineyard terroirs:
Langa and Monferrato. The winery itself was created
in the 1960s, and since then Icardi has been producing wines that are renowned
worldwide – highly fruity wines, whose “house style” is characterized by
extreme refinement, cleanliness and elegance, with balanced flavors from the
first sip. A balance achieved in the most important wines as well, whose
peculiarity may be appreciated in the short period.
Today, the winery is overseen by the bother & sister team of
Claudio and Mariagrazia Icardi (pictured). They join their father, who began
producing his own wine from the estate, instead of selling it off to other
producers, in the early 1960s.
Claudio, who sources grapes from the estate’s vineyards (10
hectares, cultivated organic and biodynamic farming; pictured) as well as 75
hectares from the surrounding region, is now the principal winemaker.
The resulting
wines stand out for their natural striking scents that vary as much as the
local
terroirs. Icardi’s productions range covers the traditional styles
of Piedmont, including those of the King –
Barolo.
Their wine production philosophy comes from the vineyard, where
production requires special care and attention, together with respectful
compliance with nature and its cycles, and climate and weather condition.
Combine
all of that with a precedence making vintage, and you have a very extraordinary
wine!
Claudio’s production and tasting notes:
100% Nebbiolo ; 40 years average vine age. Hand-harvested. Aged in
new French barriques for 36 months.
“Ruby red in color with scents that are rich and spicy, hints of
ripe cherries. Hints of ripe cherry. Soft and round. Can cellar up to 25
years.”
