Châteauneuf-du-Papes
are among the most natural expressions of grapes, place and vintage. Their
vineyards are farmed organically and/or biodynamically, and with the region's
abundant sunshine and frequent winds (called
le mistral), preclude the
need for herbicides or pesticides. The wines themselves are just as equally
pure, their flavors rarely masked by aging in new oak.
At
the heart of the prestigious appellation,
La Célestière winery (formerly
known as
La Glaciere), with vineyards located on several terroirs
around the ancient French CDP village, is at the forefront of winemaking
combining modern technology with old world half-barrels, tanks and concrete
vats. The 2010
vintage marks the second production
under the
new British owners, who appear to be going from strength to
strength as their 2010’s were some of the finest wines of the vintage!
Noel
Joyce (pictured in blue shirt with winemaker, Arnaud Ferrier) is an English who
married a Parisian woman, Béatrice, where the couple lived for many years. She
worked as a lawyer and Neil made a fortune by working with soap dispensers.
Then, some years ago they decided to live another life – they wanted to make
wines. At first they bought a very beautiful place in Provence before moving to
the Chateauneuf-du-Pape
. After they purchased the estate, extensive work and
capital was required to modernize La Celestiere’s 10 hectares of 100 year old
vineyards and wine making facilities. Today, in just a few short years, the
domaine is now one of the most modern in the CDP!
60%
old vine Grenache, 20% Mourvedre and 20% Cinsault. 900 cases produced.
Reviews:
“A
blend of Grenache and the rest Mourvedre, Cinsault, the 2010 Chateauneuf du
Pape Tradition exhibits a classic Provencal nose of roasted herbs, kirsch
liqueur, lavender, forest floor and balsam wood. It is an impressively built,
concentrated, deep ruby/purple-colored effort that should drink well for 10-15
years.”

“Bright
purple. Aromas and flavors of black raspberry and blueberry with spice and
floral notes adding complexity. Juicy and focused, with very good finishing
clarity and lingering floral and spice cake nuances. Tannins came up with
aeration but weren't a match for this wine's energetic fruit.”
