This Domaine was created when René Lequin (pictured with John) married the daughter of the great vigneron, Michel Colin. René’s family owned some vineyards in Santenay and Michel Colin gave his daughter some more in Chassagne, Puligny and Saint-Aubin! They have a very diverse Domaine and they are known as being some of the biggest innovators in Burgundy… first to use screw caps, trying different size oak barrels, length of time in the barrel and different toasts. The wines of the Domaine are superb, clean and pure with gorgeous fruit. The 2011 Saint-Aubin has a very fresh scent with citrus rind, soft pear, and a hint of garden herbs. Beautiful weight on palate, never losing its sense of balance, all leading to a long mineral laced finish.

The appellation of Saint-Aubin (pictured) is something of a “secret” that the French like to keep for themselves. Why? Simply because they know value. The vineyards of Saint-Aubin sit just to the west of the storied vineyards of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet, and offer wines of comparable quality; but just cost less! As a local restaurateur (who is French) told me years ago when I was dinning at his bistro, “You Americans can spend all you want on Puligny and Chassagne, just leave the Saint-Aubins to us!”

The wine I am offering today, the 2011 Domaine René Lequin-Colin Saint-Aubin, is an amazing value in Burgundy! I first tasted the wine with René two years ago on my trip to Burgundy before it was bottled. I knew the wine was a winner then & tasting the wine from bottle now I can reconfirm my initial evaluation. René has turned over winemaking chores to his son Françoise, and the son has learned well. René warned me that the 2011 harvest was tiny, concentration levels with the low yields was very good; but there was not much wine to be had!

This latter detail I can confirm, and underscore. The 2011 Burgundy Vintage, across the board, is sold out at the wineries. Orders must already have been placed and confirmed, and if not, then you’ve missed the party – there is none left!
