The World’s
greatest white wines are
Cru-level white Burgundies!
The Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru (premier Cru) wines are
those made under the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation, from 100% Chardonnay grapes
grown in this officially recognized Premier Cru vineyard. Here, the limestone
soils are at their finest and richest, bringing superb, unmatched minerality to
the wines. The vineyard orientation is also at its best, allowing the grapes to
benefit from exceptional ripening conditions. The soils around are
characteristically “Burgundian” with a high content of limestone. There is a
distinct difference, however, between the vineyard sites to the south of
Chassagne-Montrachet village and those to the north. To the south, they have a
higher concentration of limestone marl and red gravel – soils which suits Pinot
Noir better. But to the north, the harder marlstone gives way to softer, finer
limestone structures, and
it is here that the world's most-respected
Chardonnay is made!
Nestled among these most-prized Burgundy vineyards of Les
Chaumes, La Caniere, and Les Chénes
, is Morgeot.
I was beyond-lucky to spend time exploring these treasured
vineyards and their respective wineries, as well as tasting some of the
stunning wines produced by the smaller Domaine houses, all the while realizing
the greatness of their wines! I have always said that the most sophisticated
wine to experience is white Burgundy, and this spectacular Chassagne is just
for that purpose. And of all of the white Burgs I tasted, the
Domaine
Bachelet Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot
was the most exquisite,
period.
The brothers, Jean Louis (pictured with wife, and John) and Vincent
are the 4th generation of Bachelets making wine in the Chassagne, and I met
each at their winemaking facility and cellar. Not only do both brothers own
their Morgeot vineyards, they vinify their own wines all under one roof. This
unforgettable wine is Jean Louis' exquisite Chassagne-Montrachet, and the main
reason why I had traveled to Burgundy.
This wine was greater than spectacular, and to this day, I
can still remember the experience!
John’s Bachelet-Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot tasting
notes:
“Dense and tightly wound, offering toast, peach, citrus and
mineral flavors matched to a lively structure and supple texture. This smolders
under the surface with tension and energy. Terrific length. A white not to over
chill since doing so would numb it’s layering and complexity.”
