My Personal Recommendation For You

Chateau de Montfaucon ‘Baron Louis’ Cotes du Rhone 2010 (Regularly $29.99) Now $23.99

90pts Robert Parker / One of the greatest vintages anywhere / Save 20%!

Just across the Rhône river from the esteemed vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, sits this 88-acre estate, owned and operated by Rodolphe de Pins (pictured), a UC Davis graduate and former member of the winemaking staff at Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe (in Châteauneuf). De Pins, who has a picked up a touch of Aussie twang to his English while working for Henschke during one harvest, returned to the historic French appellation and conquered the critics with a great Côtes du Rhône, the cuvée he calls Baron Louis – a production from select vineyards with vines between 50-90 years of age!

The Baron Louis de Montfaucon was the ancestor of the family who restored the medieval château (pictured) in the 19th century. He was, unlike De Pins, an amateur of wine producing and selling his wine. For this reason their prestige cuvee has been named in his honor. The 2010 cuvÊe is a blended composition of organic 55% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Cinsault, 10% Carignan, and 5% Mourvèdre.

“The spirit I search for in Montfaucon wines is elegance and finesse. I like wines that are complex, but also enjoyable and easy to drink; like the wines of Burgundy, but working with the southern Rhône varietals and climate.”

The 2010 RhĂ´ne vintage is the other story, in consideration of the perfect weather conditions, rain in the spring time and not too hot temperatures during summer that allowed the grapes to mature slowly keeping their acidity. Hence, the wines produced during 2010 are perfectly balanced and have an excellent aging potential.

[70% of the blend was aged in five wine oak barrels for 18 months. Bottled after 21 months].

Reviews:

“The other outstanding offering is the medium to full-bodied 2010 Baron Louis...Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by sumptuous notes of raspberries, kirsch, spring flowers and loamy, earthy soil. The Baron Louis can be enjoyed now, however it will be superb with several years of additional cellar time.” – 90 pts. Robert Parker

“A rock-solid red, with crushed plum and fig fruit layered with cassis, black licorice and toasted spice flavors. Offers depth and character, with nice notes of tar and singed bay leaf rolling through the finish. 3,800 cases made.”
