My Personal Recommendation For You

Chateau Clos de Sarpe 2006      St.Émilion; Bordeaux      Bttl price $89.99      Case Bttl $79.99

94+pts Robert Parker

With the massive demand for top Bordeaux World Wide, it is rare that I am able to find a great wine that is a true bargain. After tasting the wine and falling in love with it. I secured as much of the wine as the Chateau would give only to have them cut it by 75%. Unfortunately not much wine but what a wine! The wine is the 2006 Chateau Clos de Sarpe, a monster St Emillion of the absolute highest caliber. The wine is sourced from an extremely old vine, 12 acre site that makes tiny amounts of wine. The great Michel Rolland consults, possibly the greatest wine maker of our time. Parker compares the wine to the great Chateau Ausone in its structure and size and comments that it is reminiscent of some of the finest vintages from the 1800’s. There is no question that this is a big wine with the drinking window starting now and all the way out to 2040. This is a wine if you can help it can lay down for decades like some of the great First Growths, it has the great winemaking and raw materials to do so. The biggest difference is the price!! We are not talking $500 to $1000 a bottle. The wine can be had for $79.99 by the case and I can tell you I have been in this business for twenty plus years and this is an awesome buy. This is a limited Cuvee only 825 cases made that is literally made grape by grape. Huge 94+pts by Parker. Typical classified Chateau’s make ten to twenty thousand cases a year. Clos du Sarpe is handmade, artisanal art in a bottle. Delivery end March.

Tasting Notes: As I have consistently written in the past, this limited production cuvee, from a 12-acre site that contains a parcel of extremely old vines, 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, is meant to last three decades or more. This wine exhibits enormous extraction, tannin, and richness. Tasting like a liqueur of rocks interwoven with creme de cassis, espresso roast, toasty oak, and enormous, it is neither out of balance nor astringent. It is a concentrated, impeccably balanced St.-Emilion made with an uncompromising view of the craft of winemaking. It displays superb intensity, a fabulous texture, tannic overlay, incredibly ripe, pure fruit, and perfectly aligned acidity and tannin. 94+pts Parker.
