My Personal Recommendation For You

Domaine de Bablut Anjou Villages Brissac (AOC) 2011     Loire Valley; France     Our bttl price $23.99

France’s other Cabernet!

The Daviau family has a long heritage in the Anjou region of France’s Loire Valley. As grape farmers and mill workers since the 16 th century, the family continues working the vines around the city of Brissac. At the end of the 19 th century, the family decided to fully dedicate their work to viticulture.

Anjou-Villages Brissac (a sub-appellation of the Anjou-Villages [AOC] region) encompasses the vineyards around the village of Brissac-Quincé plus nine other surrounding villages. The red wines produced here are of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet

Sauvignon blends, consistently known for their dynamically-complex with silky tannins.

Today, Domaine de Bablut is operated by heir, Christophe Daviau (pictured), who after a lengthy exodus to Australia, followed by receiving a Diploma of Oenology at Bordeaux University, returned home to the family grape farming business. One year later in 1990, he set upon the notion to forget everything he learned at wine school so as to better protect his family’s soil.

His immediate focus was to foster the biodiversity of this great terroir and to produce high-quality, ‘healthy’ wines.

In 1996 Christophe converted to organic farming methods, and the vineyards have been ran “green” ever since without the use of any herbicides or pesticides. Later in 2006, he adopted biodynamic farming methods to the same vineyards as well.

In recent years, there have been great leaps to modernize the vinification process while respecting traditions, especially with regards to the raw ingredients. But once the grapes are harvested “I leave Mother Nature alone to do her work.” Painstakingly, he has preserved his vineyards from external contaminators; each plot is protected by natural fences (trees, bushes, etc.), which conjointly was selected to be respectful to the local insects.

Winemaker’s notes:

70% Cabernet Franc , 30% Cabernet Sauvignon / 18 months in stainless steel vats.

“Complex and concentrated, this blend of Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon has weight and richness. The red and black fruits are layered with firm, dry tannins that promise aging. It is rich, the Cabernet Franc showing its characteristic smoky perfumes.” — Christophe Daviau
