“Paso

“Whether
you’re a collector or new to wine, Paso Robles and its wines are worth knowing

In
the golden, oak-studded hills of Paso Robles’ acclaimed west side, there is a
man with a Homeric vision. His name is Daniel Daou and he has been devoting his
life and every imaginable resource to creating, first and foremost,
a
Cabernet Sauvignon that rivals the very best in the world!
Perched
atop a stunning ridge at
2,200 feet (pictured), the Daou Cabernet winery
vineyards are embraced by a tangible serenity, but all is not blissful here –
Paso
Robles’ west side experiences some of the largest temperature swings than in
any other California wine region.
It’s summer days range between 85
and 105 degrees, but often cool down by 40 or 50 degrees at night thanks to the
evening fogs and cool breezes that roll in from the ocean – Mother Nature’s
air-conditioner.
Following
the two challenged vintages of 2011 and 2010, Paso Robles experienced a growing
season in 2012 that wine critics are currently hailing as
“unprecedented” and
“possibly the best in decades”. As a result, the most prevalent of the
red varietals grown here, Cabernet Sauvignon, flourished to heights comparable
to Napa and Bordeaux. Likewise, according to Daniel Daou (pictured [rt.]
with his brother Georges),
“Paso Robles is the ultimate terroir for Cabernet
Sauvignon.”
This kind of synergy happens rarely: super-intensive
(Cabernet) vineyard culture, superlative climate and terroir amidst a dream
vintage!
Production
notes:
78%
Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% Merlot, 7.5% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot with 9
months in 60%
new French oak.
Tasting
review:
“Rich
deep dark berry color with creamy mocha-espresso flavors is the first
impression of this wine. The tannins are well integrated with the fruit and
create a long finish that keeps going. It’s full bodied with a saturated finish
while accompanied by bright acidity and infused by black current and cooked
blueberries fruit. Balanced and intense, it showcases what Bordeaux varieties
can perform when managed correctly.”
– Daniel Daou, Winemaker.
