Documents
mentioning the Gagliole Estate date back hundreds of years and there are
countless ancient legends regarding this property, which continues to conserve
memories of a distant time. A manuscript in the State Archives in Siena reveals
that the son of the Langobard King Berengarius, who had fallen in love with the
Tuscan countryside, bequeathed the Gagliole Estate to his wife in 994 A.D. The
passing of centuries did no harm to the beauty of this estate which preserves
the special character of this unique landscape. Ancient terraced vineyards tell
the story of a carefully preserved landscape. The delicate balance between soil
and climate is the ideal model for those who have chosen to cultivate this land
respectful of nature and its rhythms. Gagliole is an impassioned universe of
persons who are determined to bring out the best that the plants and land can offer.
The ancient terraced-vineyards and perfect soil later combined with
sustainable-farming techniques make the tiny Gagliole property the perfect
place to grow Sangiovese. Here, nearly every aspect of the wine making is
done by hand, which has been entrusted to world-famous Stefano Chioccioli; who
in recent years has transformed their rather rustic wines into polished, highly
rated, spectacular wines – Molto bene!
Stefano
defines himself as an agronomist (the application
of the various soil and plant sciences to soil management and crop production;
scientific agriculture) before a winemaker. His attraction
to the various disciplines to the world of agriculture later was immediately
shocked by viticulture and for oenology immediately after. He personalizes its
curriculum with the subjects more suitable for knowing the vine and the world
of wine. He graduated with 110 with honors.
First
employed at Ruffino (Chianti), Chioccioli has defined these seven years
as formidable years because they allowed him to discover the complex issues
surrounding viticultural and winemaking that would later prove crucial in his
professional experience.
“My
approach to the wine world begins with a viticultural approach; my work begins
in the vineyard, the ultimate source of quality. When I begin working on a
project, my goal is always defined by the land in which I am working, and the
goal is always to find the right balance between the originality of the
territory, expressed through its podiatric and climatic characteristics, and
the techniques most appropriate to exalt it.â€
The
Sangiovese grape performs better here than anywhere else in the world because
it can receive more direct sunlight, which is a major benefit of the many hillside
vineyards in Tuscany. The higher elevations also increase the diurnal
temperature variation, helping the grapes maintain their balance of sugars and
acidity as well as their aromatic qualities. The juicy grapes were at perfect
ripeness thanks to careful pruning and meticulous management of the greenery.
During a Gagliole harvest, the tendrils are still pushed aside by the hands of
men who then carefully pick the grapes and gently place them in crates. They
use a sorting table to increase the quality of their wines. This ensures that
only the best grapes find their way into our oak fermentation vats.
Reviews:
“The 2010 Gagliole Rosso is gorgeous in this vintage. A
rich, deeply spiced wine, the 2010 is laced with cloves, cinnamon, plums,
licorice and black cherries. A deep, dense wine, the 2010 is loaded with fruit,
but at the same time, there is more than enough structure to provide support.
All the elements are very nicely balanced here. The 2010 is 90% Sangiovese, 10%
Cabernet Sauvignon.†– 94 pts. Antonio
Galloni (08/2013).
“The 2010 Gagliole (90%
Sangiovese blended with Cabernet Sauvignon) is a dark and hearty Tuscan red
with thick layers of black fruit, spice, leather and fragrant pipe tobacco that
peel off with steady determination. The palate is marked by similar intensity
and there is enormous plushness and richness that is both memorable and
impressive. It’s a great effort from a fantastic vintage that promises a long
life ahead. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2028.†- 93 pts. Monica Larner
/ Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate
“A wine with full body
and lots of fruit and spices. Hints of chocolate and walnuts. So juicy and
delicious. Wonderful balance. Blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink
now or hold.†– 93 pts. James
Suckling (08/29/2012).
