Élu (meaning “elected”) is the flagship red blend wine of this prestigious, Napa Valley winery, renown for estate-grown Bordeaux varietal wines. This highly-acclaimed wine is a blend of the five historic grapes typically blended in the revered French Bordeaux wines –76% Cabernet, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Over the past few decades, multiple California winemakers have been producing incredible reds using the Bordeaux-recipe, often carrying the legal “Meritage” (rhymes with “heritage”) wine designation. The Meritage term was established in 1988 by a small group of Napa Valley, California vintners, who increasingly were frustrated by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol regulation stipulating wines contain at least 75% of a specific grape to be labeled as that varietal. Naturally, as interest grew in creating these Bordeaux-style wines, which by their blended nature fail to qualify for varietal status, members sought to create a recognizable name for their high-quality blended wines.

St. Supery Estate Vineyards is a family-owned, sustainably-farmed winery with more than 515 acres of both certified “Napa Green” (considered the wine industry's most comprehensive, best practices program for land-use and wine production) and California Sustainable Winemaking vineyards. Generally, when it comes to Napa vineyards, two main categories exist – floor or hillside – and each category produces quite distinctive flavors. The success of this wine Bordeaux-style wine has always been greatly due to sourced grapes from valley floor vineyards (pictured), which are somewhat similar to those in the Bordeaux region. The Napa Valley floor micro-climate is always warmer than those of the cooler, mountainous hillsides, thus producing plumper, riper grapes. Worth-noting are the Cabernet grapes used in the Élu productions – produced in either one of their two prized Rutherford (Napa floor) vineyards established in 1920!

But in the foreground is winemaker, Michael Scholz (pictured), who was the 6th generation to grow up on his family’s Australian vineyard in the Barossa Valley. Michael came to St. Supéry in 2001. During his tenure, he has created the distinctive style that has made St. Supéry the benchmark producer of Napa Valley Meritage. Oenologist and consultant, Michel Rolland has said, “Michael Scholz is on my list of great winemakers from around the world.”

Winemaker’s Notes:

“The 2010 Elu is a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and the rest tiny dollops of Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. This The fruit was harvested in the cool morning hours, then crushed to tank where fermentation commenced after a brief period of resting on skins. Warm fermentation temperatures were encouraged to achieve the desired color and structure for the wine before an extended maceration time on skins prior to final pressing. The wine was transferred directly to barrel for 28 months of maturation.”

“This red Bordeaux varietal blend has deep, vibrant purple hues. A complex nose of blackberry and cassis laced with milk chocolate, mocha and molasses intertwine with cedar and toasted vanillin notes of cellar maturation. Flavors of blackberry, black cherry and bright ripe currant couple with vanillin and maple and are framed by a fine tannin structure. This is an elegant, graceful red wine with center, structure and charm.”
