Lodi
is hard core red Zinfandel country, the best climate for producing great Zins.
Mike McCay of McCay Cellars is producing small three hundred case lots of some
amazing Zins at great prices. Cali-Zin fans the 2010
McCay Cellars Zinfandel is a
must, ranked as one of “The 10 most
exciting wines of Lodi.” The wine is lush and push, pure and rich and superbly
long and supple on the finish. A huge 91pts by IWC just emphasizes all I tasted
in the glass. This is a Zin for Zin lovers! A definite case buy!

One
sip of this fine elixir from McCay Cellars should score yourself some
brownie points with your palate since wines of this caliber are not all that
common these days. With that said, this dazzling Lodi Zinfandel dazzling
is one not to miss out on.
Dating
back to the late 1800′s, Lodi has a long proud history of producing some of the
finest Zinfandel grapes, and subsequently, the best ‘Zin’ in California.
Nestled between the San Francisco Bay and the Sierra Nevada Mountains lies Zin
country. This region’s Mediterranean climate of warm days soothed by Delta
breezes, coupled with diverse soils, grow the state’s most sought-after, iconic
grape.
By birth, McCay Cellars has been a small boutique winery
that takes pride in producing Lodi’s best Zinfandel wines. Equally so,
McCay Cellars produces the highest quality Zin in small case lots (typically
less than three hundred cases per lot)! Michael McCay (pictured)
has been making wine since 1994, and with 20 harvests of experience, his
closest family and friends were consistent in their encouragement that he start
selling his wine under his own label. That milestone happened in 2007. With
great consideration, his wines are handcrafted from start to finish. From the
field to the bottle, Michael monitors everything in detail to ensure the wines
are of the finest quality. Likewise, it is the opinion of many “Cali-Zin fans”
that Lodi has California’s best climate for producing Zinfandel wine grapes;
mainly in part because of the Mokleumne Rivers’ sandy loam soil, along with the
Delta’s cool breezes to provide this perfect and unique terroir to grow
them.
“My goal is simple…to make a Zinfandel with a sense of
presence and character that expresses the trueness of the vineyard.”
Tasting reviews: “Red licorice, bright cherry and vanilla aromas leap out of the glass, and
there’s also this interesting note of worn leather that adds another level of
complexity. Firm, grippy-tannins and fresh acid for structure. A medley of
strawberry, raspberry and blackberry fruit glides over the palate. It’s all
rounded out by (not dominated by) hazelnut and toasted oak. The sweet red fruit
mixes really well with this earthy and leathery aspect. The finish is really
long and pure. Impressive stuff, and I can’t stop thinking that this wine just
tastes hand-made, in the best sense of the word.” –
Cellartracker “The
initial aromas are reminiscent of a late harvested fruit smoothie made with
blackberry, sweet Oregon cherry, hazelnut and a hint of figs. On the palate it
is a texturally pleasing wine that is lush, plush and sensual. The big berry
swirl flavor continues to come through all the way to the long lingering finish
making this a perfect match for fall tailgating grill items and slow smoked
southern BBQ. For a blockbuster experience that emanates the soul of Lodi, grab
a bottle of this McCay Zin and share it with love. 288 cases produced.”
