As Good As German
Riesling Gets A Great Wine From The
Great Dr. Enno Lippold
I
have been a huge fan of the great Rieslings of Dr Enno Lippold for some years
now but we were never able to get any of his wine until now. I met the Doctor
onanother project he was working on from Northern Italy, he makes wine for
Wineries all over the world but his prized possessions are the tiny amounts of
wine he makes from the steep old vine, red clay soils of the Urziger Wurzgarten
that run into the Mosel River. These are some of the greatest vineyards in all
of the Mosel. The wines have the special characteristics of mango fruit
that you only get in Rieslings from this area. We have been able to secure a
tiny amount of his 2008 Dr. Lippold Urziger
Wurzgarten Weltersberg Alte Reben Riesling Spatelese and I can tell
you this wine will move you. 90pts Parker and 90pts Tanzer I absolutely
adored this wine. Treat yourself to this great wine. Will sell out fast, very
limited. Vineyard on a par with the Grand Crus in Burgundy.
Dr.
Lippold Urziger Wurzgarten Weltersberg Alte Reben Riesling Spatlese
2008
Mosel region; Germany

Blazing
red and insanely steep, the Ürziger Würzgarten (“ERTS-ih-ger VERTS-gar-ten”)
vineyards fill the picturesque amphitheater formed by this dramatic bend in the
Germany’s Mosel River. The terroir here produces a completely different
kind of Riesling wine, i.e., one with exotic, spicy aromas and a mesmerizing,
burst of mango fruit flavors. The vines, themselves, are some of the oldest in
the entire region, one established
during an era of prosperity under the rule of Prussia (post Napoleonic)
starting with the historic vintage of 1819!
So
for centuries the "WĂĽrzgarten" has been considered as one of the best
vineyard sites on the Mosel. The "Weltersberg", where the grapes for
this wine originate from, were classified as a "Grand Cru" at par
with the Grand Crus in Burgundy. The small sized berries are the fruits from
genuine rootstock vines of an average age of 50 years with very low
yield. Since 2006, the winery has been offering its Riesling wine to Germany as
well as other foreign markets. Dr. Lippold is a multi-dimensional
winemaker/oenologist, who travels throughout the wine producing regions to
consult and assist wineries. So the story to tell here is twofold, the
man behind the product AND the unique red slate soil (shown) which adds
minerals that create a wealth of aromas of spices and fruits, predominantly
ripe mango accompanied by familiar peach, apricot, mint and petals. Mosel
Rieslings of this level will gain greater complexity in the years to come with
proper storage conditions.
Reviews:
"Veteran
merchant, commentator, and consultant Dr. Enno Lippold - who is wholeheartedly
involved with projects to preserve viticulture in the steep slopes of the Mosel
- decided to set an example by acquired some of his own, in the historically
renowned so-called Weltersberg portion of the Urziger Wurzgarten (a site rich
in fine, iron-rich particulate matter). With a local vintner Benedikt Pfeiffer
as hands-on collaborator, he rendered in cask from his inaugural vintage three
wines that benefited from extremely gentle handling and lees contact. They are each
labeled only with his name and 'Alte Reben' on one side and the details -
including the no longer officially-recognized name of the site - rather
confusingly concatenated on the other." - 90 Pts. David Schildknecht / Robert Parker’s The
Wine Advocate (Feb 2010).
“The
Lippold 2008 Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Spatlese Alte Reben Weltersberg A.P.
#2 - harvested, like his other Spatlese, November 9 - offers classic Urzig
aromas of kiwi and strawberry tinged with orange zest, caramel, and wood smoke.
It comes to the palate with lovely delicacy, subtle creaminess, and a levity
and invigoration enhanced by salt and tart fruit skin as well as the
impingement of trapped CO2; and finishes with finely-tuned sweetness, dynamic
interplay of flavors, and sheer cling.” — 90 Pts. Stephen Tanzer.
