The
2000 Vintage For Bordeaux Is One Of The Greatest Ever
The Personal Property Of Legendary 100pt Bordeaux Winemaker
Denis Durantou
This
was a find that we were lucky to get our hands on. Denis Durantou can only
be described as a Master Bordeaux Winemaker. He is one of the very few rock
stars in Bordeaux, whatever he makes turn to gold. He has mastered all the
great appellations. His 2012 Chateau L”Eglise Clinet was the only wine from the
vintage to score 100pts by Parker. Today I bring to you Mr. Durantou’s personal
property from the Pomerol, his pride and joy from the great 2000 vintage. The 2000 Chateau La Chenade is an absolutely glorious Bordeaux that is starting to really
hit its stride. The 2000 vintage for Bordeaux is one of the greatest ever,
rivalling 2009, 1982, 1961 and 1945. The wine is also a great value from
such a great vintage and such a great winemaker. The wine is starting to peak,
a fleshy style of Pomerol, black fruits, hints of smoke and kirsch. This wine
is a wow!

Denis
Durantou is a winemaker's winemaker: a singular man of forthright opinions and
great integrity, whose wines articulately express the soil on which his modest
Pomerol chateau stands. A man, who from childhood, knew he would make wine far
beyond the parochial confines of Pomerol to those hallowed vineyards of
Pauillac, St Julien, and St Estèphe.
For
over twenty years, he has tried and succeeded in pushing the boundaries of wine
making while continually expanding his knowledge of terroir. His immediate
predecessor at the family owned chateau was responsible for making the
legendary 1947 Cheval Blanc, but the young man who took over the reins
was uninhibited, and while maintaining an appropriate degree of respect, went
on to improve and revolutionize the winemaking at his family estate without the
least self-doubt. With a vision and intellect capable of challenging the
many-narrow minded practices which for so long have restrained Bordeaux – at
every level. His ability to create massive and beautifully structured wines in
the great Bordeaux tradition, while remaining at the cutting edge, reassuringly
defies the long held view that only over-extracted monsters might gain praise
from the point scoring gurus, who for way too long have held sway over consumer
fashion. His 2012 Chateau L’Église Clinet is the only red wine of this vintage
to receive a potential 100 point score from Robert Parker!

And
it is here, on personal estate, a
25 acre property in the appellation of Lalande-de-Pomerol (and less than 1km
from the famous Chateaux’s of Pomerol), he produces a wine of pure elegance. The property, planted half with Merlot and half with
Cabernet Franc also includes a small house and a winery. "I had bought
the wines from the estate for a few years for blending into a wine I make
called La Chenade, and when the owner wanted to sell, I felt I should buy
it," said Durantou. "The soil and exposure are very close to the
plateau of Pomerol where L'Église Clinet is located."
Durantou’s tasting notes: "I am very happy with
the results in 2000. The wine shows very good fruit and body as well as tannin
structure.
