Stunning Example Of
Classically Style Chateauneuf du Pape Drinking
To Perfection At A Great Price
The
great red wines of Chateauneuf du Pape rival the finest France has to offer but
at a fraction of the cost. With their glorious fruit and opulent concentration, these wines with four to five years of cellar age really open up and show
themselves in all their glory and the 2008 Mas
de Boislauzon Chateauneuf du Pape is
a great example. Boislauzon is one of the great producers in the Southern Rhone
with the Sixth generation of the Chaussy family now managing this property.
They have 22 acres with 70 year old vines of some of the finest vineyards in
Chateauneuf. The 2008 rendition is drinking to perfection and with our 36%
savings makes this a great buy!
The
praised Mas de Boislauzon winery is located in the north of Chateauneuf du Pape (“shah-too-NUHF
due Pahp”) not far from the ancient Roman city of Orange. The estate is
managed by Monique Chaussy along with daughter, Christine,
and son, Daniel (winemaker) – the brother and sister act and sixth
generation to manage the 22 acres. Aside from vineyards in the Chateauneuf du
Pape, they also possess 15 hectares of vines, south in the Cotes du Rhone.
Interestingly, the estate practices new-age, biodynamic farming techniques
(certified agriculture biologique / 2012), a method of organic farming that
employs what proponents describe as "a spiritual science with a holistic
understanding of agricultural processes". And with six generations
of wine making, the wines in their portfolio today are stunning examples of
what Chateauneuf du Pape does best!
Most
notably is their CDP, produced from rock-littered terroir vineyards of sand,
loam (sand, silt, and clay mix) and limestone – on which their oldest, prized
Mourvedre vines averaging a respectable 70 years of age! Robert Parker acclaimed this production stating, “The
2008 Chateauneuf du Pape has turned out even better than I expected. A
blend of 70% Grenache and the rest equal parts Syrah and Mourvedre aged in
concrete tanks and foudres (large wooden vats) from the family’s 20+ acres of
vines.”
The les
deux chĂŞnes (two oaks) image that appears on the label is a sketch of the two
oak trees on the property that mark the actual border limits of the CĂ´tes du
Rhône Villages and Châteauneuf du Pape appellations.
Tasting
reviews:
“A
very strong effort with surprising length, depth, and attractiveness. It
possesses a dark plum color along with big, sweet nose of soy, black currants,
black cherries, and garrigue (a type of low,
soft-leaved Mediterranean
brush). This is a richly fruity, long, well-endowed 2008 to drink
during its first 7-8 years of life.” – 90 pts. Robert Parker (11/2009).
“Ruby-red. Assertive aromas of black raspberry, mocha,
anise and cracked pepper. Energetic, bright and sweet, offering lovely spicy
lift to flavors of dark berries, herbs and dark chocolate. Offers impressive
depth and power for the vintage, with no rough edges. Finishes on a sweet note,
accented by gentle tannins and good persistence.” Stephen Tanzer /
International Wine Cellar (Mar-Apr 2011).
