Best Malbec Over $20 At Decanter World Wine Awards
Multi
Gold Medal Winner Around The World
NOW DOWN TO $23.99 PER. FULL BODIED RED WINE DOES NOT GET
BETTER AT THE PRICE
I first heard about this wine
when it won the Decanter World Wine Awards and I have been hunting it down ever
since and after tasting last week I was smitten. I grabbed as much as I could
but sadly everyone wants the wine and our allocation was cut in half. This is a
top echelon, pinnacle Malbec of the highest order. If it were a Napa Cab it
would be over a hundred dollars a bottle. The wine won best Malbec over $20 by
Decanter beating out hundreds of contenders. The wine is the 2011
Bodega Raffy Malbec Reserve and is an incredible big red at its price
point. Bodega Raffy was founded in 2007 by Frenchman Jean-Louis Raffy, a
university professor with a passion for wine, who fell in love with a high
quality wine producing area in Tupungato, Uco Valley, Mendoza. The vineyards of
Bodega Raffy are located at 1250m (4000ft) above sea-level, benefiting from
high sunlight intensity during the day; increasing grape color and maturity and
cooling winds during the night; preserving natural acidity and freshness of
aromas. The higher the altitude, the higher the ultraviolet radiation,
this helps to stimulate and create richer tannins, while the inclination of the
slopes improves drainage. The terroir is a wonderful combination of stony,
sandy and calcareous soil, which was formed during the Quaternary era by
alluvial erosions of the Andes. They make great wine. I think a large part of
the wine superb quality has to do with the fact that vines used to make this
wine are 50 years of age, yields are kept very low only 39 hectoliters
per hectare and Mr. Raffy has employed the same wine maker as famed Chateau
Le Gay and Chateau La Violette in Pomerol to make the wines. These
are some of the finest Chateau's in Pomerol, sell for $200 to $500 a bottle.
Only 1300 cases made and most has been gobbled up in Europe. I strongly
recommend!

Very dark, like elderberry juice, with deep
purple rim and black core. Inviting, intense but not overly sweet dark fruit,
with a hint of violets but also something more savoury and mineral. Already
surprisingly complex even in it youth. Firm, rich, dense but not heavy. Kept
lively and juicy at the end by the freshness and the purity of the fruit.
