This
is a great Spanish red at any price. The fact that it’s under twenty a bottle
makes it a no-brainer. Old vines and low yields with just the perfect amount of
oak aging when made correctly is the perfect ingredients for great red wine.
Sourced from fifty year old vines with a tiny yield of 3.5 tons per hectare and
ten months in small oak have resulted in a rich red with glorious concentration
matched with great finesse and elegance. The wine is sourced from a
micro-climate called Ribera del Jucar, at an elevation of 2400 feet, is
absolutely perfect for growing spectacular Tempranillo grapes. This wine is
absolutely delicious, great for lovers of Numanthia and Clio, big, rich and oh
so smooth and supple. Definitely taking a case home to enjoy!

Bodega La Magdelena is a Spanish co-operative winery founded by
60 local growers in 1958 that presently has grown to 290 member partners who
deliver grapes from over 1,600 acres of property. Their tremendous grape
portfolio consists of the varieties Tempranillo, Bobal , Syrah, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Grenache and Merlot, plus the white varieties Airen, Macabeo and
(sweet) Moscatel de Grano Menudo. In 1990, they began to label their wine
products under the “Vega Moragena” brand. Today, armed
with newest in winemaking technologies, they’re committed to producing the
highest quality Spanish wines. Of these innovations, the one considered
most influential was the incorporation of stainless steel tanks with electronic
programmers designed to control temperatures during every step of the complex
and delicate fermentation process. However, prior to any fermentation is the
harvest, and a new piece of equipment to streamline that busy and chaotic
period is with the infrared analyzer that performs a full scan of each
container of grapes to the winery from the vineyards. This single tool
can quickly differentiate each grape variety, allowing optimum segregation control
during the busy and hectic harvest. What’s more is the winery’s newly
built cellar which is able to hold 250 barrels of American and French oak to
produce the best possible Tempranillo from vines averaging 35 to 65 years!
Tempranillo, also known as
Tinta Roriz , Tinto Ribiera, Cencibel (and many, many others) is a black
grape variety widely grown to make full-bodied red wines in its native Spain.
Often making up as much as 90% of a blend, Tempranillo is less frequently
bottled as a single varietal. During the 1990s, Tempranillo started
experiencing a renaissance in wine production worldwide. This surge began
partly as a result of the efforts of a 'new wave' of Spanish growers and co-ops
like BLM, who showed that it was possible to produce wines of great character
and quality in areas outside of the Rioja region. With an altitude
reaching 740 meters (2,400 feet), gentle slopes, varying soil textures and
layers of pebbles, the "Ribera del JĂşcar" is a genuine
micro-climate indigenous to grow incredible Tempranillo.
Wine tasting review: “Produced in collaboration with Majuelos de Espana, the 2011
Sueno (which means “dream”) comes from an average of 50-year-old vines cropped
at 3.5 tons per hectare and matured for 10 months in Allier, Nevers and
Hungarian oak barrels (40% new). It offers a very intense bouquet of dark
berries, mulberry and dark plum, dried pressed flowers developing with time.
The palate is very well-balanced, placing a gentle but insistent grip on the
palate. The oak is very well-integrated (any more new, and it would have
unbalanced the wine) and it lends the dark chocolate-tinged finish a seamless
quality and weight without impinging upon the terroir character. It is quite a
“deep” Tempranillo that will repay one or two years in bottle. Drink
2014-2019.”
