Takes its name from the free-spirited gentleman named Bruscone who lived in the woods of the Barbi Estate. Patented system of vinification, based on the Tuscan tradition of “May Wines.” A wine which was born from the extensive soaking of skinned Sangiovese grapes that rest for 3 months with their pomace. One of the first “Super-Tuscan’s.” Fattoria dei Barbi is "The" reference for Brunello in Montalcino. Barbi's approach of using tradition to anchor contemporary expressions of wine continues to position Barbi as a leading producer in Brunello. The Colombini family is one of the most influential of the region and have been an integral part in writing the history of Brunello. Fattoria dei Barbi's commitment to innovation and quality have lead to many "firsts."

Vivid ruby-red color with aromas of red berries, red currants, cherries and notes of eucalyptus. The palate is fresh with soft tannins, medium body, bright acidity and a long finish with slight menthol notes.

Tenuta di Biserno continues the Antinori family's winemaking legacy, which dates back 26 generations covering a span of more than 600 years. In 1994, while looking to expand his Tenuta dell'Ornellaia vineyard, Marchese Lodovico Antinori came upon the property of Tenuta di Biserno near Bibbona in Tuscany's Alta Maremma. With more hills and stones than nearby Bolgheri, this land appeared to be ideally suited to produce a new and different wine. In 2001 Lodovico and his brother Piero, established this elite wine estate and Lodovico provides the day-to-day direction for the estate. The Tenuta di Biserno estate is comprised of approximately 150 acres divided into three vineyards planted to Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Syrah. The entire area is heavily influenced by its proximity to the coast, but the varieties selected for each of the 30 parcels that make up the planted acres were carefully selected based on slope, soil composition, exposure and the influence of sea breezes. Helena Lindberg is the winemaker, with Michel Rolland in a consulting winemaker capacity. Ranieri Orsini is the vineyard manager. Currently the wines are crafted in a well-equipped winery built for exclusive use in a nearby village, until the new state-of-the-art, gravity-flow winery, which will be located in the center of the vineyards, is completed. James Suckling noted in the Wine Spectator in October 2007 - "I find the style of the property's wines already to be a fascinating combination of Ornellaia's and Sassicaia's, emphasizing the generosity of the former and the firmness and backbone of the latter.”

Christmas Comes Early from Italy

Wine won the country’s most-prestigious wine award, Tre Bicchieri. It scored 91 from Antonio Galloni and at $17.99 it is a slam dunk winner. This is definitely a case buy offering as it will fly. Galloni called the wine one of the flag bearers of the new wave of very successful Montepulciano wines. A no brainer at the price.

For years I have been telling my customers about the importance of Tre Bicchieri, Italy’s most important wine award, presented annually by Gambero Rosso, which is the foremost authority on Italian wine. Winning the award is a huge deal; Tre Bicchieri means “3 Glasses” and each year 20,000 wines are reviewed and only 400 receive the award. Today’s wine, the 2015 Cataldi Madonna Malandrino won the award for 2016 and you will flip for it. Further proof of the wine’s irresistible charms is that Antonio Galloni, one of the most important wine critics today scored the wine 91 points, a huge score for a red wine under $20.

In terms of a value wine, this is one of the very best coming out of Italy. To have a wine that wowed Gambero Rosso and Antonio Galloni at way under $20 is truly a special opportunity and there is no need look anywhere else for a quality-to-price ratio stunner.

“Malandrino” is a rascal, or to be naughty, and at the price of $17.99 this is a definitely a naughty wine – but in a very good way; what makes it so mischievous is that is so good for such a low price. I was shocked by how good it was. It is made by one of Italy’s best winemakers, Lorenzo Landi, who has made great wines up and down the country. It is sourced from 6 different vineyards in Ofena, the “oven of Abruzzo”, and the warm weather produces, big, dark grapes, which in turn make magnificently complex wines.

Jump on this by the case.

"We are not winemakers," says Alois Lageder, descendant of a family that has devoted itself to wine for four generations. "We see our role more accurately as midwives and educators. Our duty is to bring our grapes into the world in good health with the greatest possible care, and to encourage the successful development of our wines at all stages."

The Lageder family has been active in the wine trade for more than 150 years. In 1855, Alois Lageder winery was founded the on the edge of Bolzano's historic center. Over the years, through the untiring efforts of four generations, the Lageder family has succeeded in purchasing several vineyards and wine estates in some of Alto Adige's best wine-growing areas.

Today the company is managed by Alois Lageder (born in 1950) and he is actively assisted by his sister Wendelgard, who is responsible for administration and public relations and his brother-in-law Luis von Dellemann, the enologist. "Our strong connection with nature, with the soil and with the local people," adds Alois Lageder, "helps us in this arduous but rewarding work."
