One Of The Greatest Big Red Wine Values
In One Of Spain's Greatest Vintages
The first rime I tasted Prima, I was blown away. It was the end of December 2004 and I was beat. We had just finished up a busy holiday season and I was cooked. One of my favorite Spanish importers Aurelio Cabastrero called saying that he had to see me. He had this incredible wine and I had to try it. With apprehension I said yes but I was not into it. He came by that afternoon and he had a Winemaker with him and his two sons. The wine was from a region called Toro in Spain and the we tasted was Prima. The wine absolutely floored me. I taste a lot of wine and once in a while you taste a wine that you instantly know is an absolute winner. Prima was that kind of wine. I could hardly hide my pleasure with the wine. We had to negotiate a price. I can now tell you that the Winemaker I met that day was the great Mariano Garcia. Mr Garcia is one of the greatest Winemakers of our time. He had made 28 vintages of Spain's First Growth Vega Sicilia, Spain's most famous red wine. Mr Garcia had decided to leave Vega Sicilia to make wine with his two sons in Toro and this was there first offering. We have since learned that the region of Toro is making some of the greatest red wine we have seen in the last five to six years. Robert Parker was recently asked which is the next great red wine region in the world and unequivocally stated that it is Toro Now back to 2004! I had a chance to buy this wine and I blew it. I told Aurelio I would follow up with him the next day and when I did it was gone. Another house, I will not mention names picked up the whole allocation and I was pissed and I have never forgotten. Prima is one of those insane red wines at the price that when I have it available I always recommend that customers pick them up. Since its release Parker has never given the wine less than 90 pts which brings me to the vintage. The 2009 vintage for Spain is spectacular, the best we have seen since 2004 and 2001. The wines are rich, endowed with superb fruit, drinking gorgeously young but will also age out brilliantly. The 2009 Primais a definite buy in this great vintage. When you pop a bottle, you will see why. The purple colored 2009 Prima is made up of 90% Tinta de Toro and 10% Garnacha aged for 12 months in seasoned French oak prior to bottling without filtration. Earthy minerals, espresso, truffle, licorice, and blackberry aromas lead to a ripe, dense, sweetly fruited, layered wine lacking only complexity. Give it 1 2 years to fill out and drink it through 2021.

From The Awesome 2009 Spanish Vintage
Comes A Big Rich Red That Drinks Like It's Three Times The Price
The 2009 vintage for Spanish reds is fantastic. Parker's WA has concluded that the finest Wineries in Spain will make their greatest wines ever in 2009.Last week I tasted a red from this great vintage that quite simply should not be missed. The wine is the 2009 Venta Del Puerto No 12 and is by far the greatest red wine I have ever tasted from Valencia. The wine is an elegant monster, a breathtaking bouquet of black tarry fruits and new oak, the palate is rich, massively concentrated, the height of opulence yet is extremely well made. Velvety smooth and supple on the back end with well hidden tannins. This extravagant red is soaring with black fruits and is a superb example of a Spanish red made in a modern, new world style. The wine would be perfect for lovers of Napa Cabs and ideal if you enjoy wines like Clio or Numanthia from Spain. Penin the Robert Parker of Spain gave the wine 91pts.The wine has surprising elegance for such a block buster. I would blind taste with reds that are three times the price and the wine would shine. A lot of wine for a little money.

Tasting Notes: A blend of Cabernet, Merlot , Syrah and Tempranillo, aged in new oak for 12 months. Bright cherry color, awesome bouquet of sweet spices, creamy oak and ripe fruit. The palate is rich and concentrated yet velvety soft, toasty with round supple tannins. Polished and extremely tasty.

The 2009 Pico Cuadro Origen will spend 22 months in new French oak. Expressive aromas of sandalwood, Asian spices, lavender, incense, tapenade, black cherry, and blackberry jam lead to an opulent, richly fruity Tempranillo that has the structure to evolve for another 6 8 years. It will provide optimum drinking from 2017 to 2029 if not longer.

Bright purple. Explosive aromas of blackberry preserves, potpourri, incense, cracked pepper and exotic oak spices. Deep and lush yet surprisingly structured, with sweet, perfumed flavors of dark berries, fruitcake and candied violet. Offers a seductive, velvety texture and a persistent, impressively vibrant finish. This sexy wine is approachable now but really deserves at least a few more years of age.

Weightless Intensity

This red is spectacular, from the great 2009 vintage in Spain where Parker's WA has declared that the finest Wineries in Spain will make their greatest wines ever in 2009, comes absolute big red perfection. One of the most respected winemakers in Spain, Juan Carlos Lopez de Lacalle set up Artadi in 1989 to make wines at the top of qualitative hierarchy and he has achieved his goal. Artadi is considered by many to make the finest wines in Rioja. Artadi vineyards are in Rioja Alavesa and he makes his top wines in the same way you would a Cult Napa Cab or top Bordeaux. The result are full bodied reds with huge dark fruits, balanced by the perfect amount of New French oak, velvety supple on the back end that rival the finest in the world. The wine I offer today the 2009 Artadi Pagos Viejos, is sourced from Artadi's oldest and best vines, including his great single vineyards, Poza, El Carretil and Valdegines. Vines average out over 75 years of age and the wines are all Tempranillo The result is a big red of incredible complexity and subtle nuances. Robert Parker hails Pagos Viejos (literally means "old debts") as "one of Spain's greatest wines". The wine has got huge scores ever since Parker started rating in 1996 averaging out at 94pts, a great accomplishment for one of the great red wines of the world. Penin the Robert Parker of Spain gave the wine a monster 96pts. The 2009 is absolutely stunning and I have a small allocation arriving in November that I have a great price to offer. The wine regularly sells at $120 and we have it down to $89.99 which is a great price for this wine. I can remember the first time I tasted Artadi's Pagos Viejos and I can tell you I have never looked at Spanish wines the same. If you love big reds, this wine will floor you.

Tasting Notes: 95pts Parker 96pts Penin
Things start heating up with the awesome 2009 Pagos Viejos, which is a blend of Juan Carlos s old plots of vine. It demands coaxing from the glass, the broody dark berry, licorice tinged fruit remaining bashful under a cloak of French oak, but intimating something alluring ten years down the line. The palate is full bodied with a silky smooth texture, the oak singing from the same hymn sheet as the precocious fruit that is underpinned by super fine tannins. It offers weightless intensity. The Pagos Viejos has fine symmetry and poise towards the finish with a just a faint tang of Seville orange marmalade on the aftertaste. Everything is in place just add time. Drink 2018 2030
