We are blessed to have two great vintages coming out of Spain back to back 2009 and 2010
Tasting Notes: Garnacha tintorera which is the same grape as Alicante Bousche. Prohibitions darling grape. Only grape in the world where the grape is actually red in color. Has thick skin. Originally developed in France by Henri Bousche in 1866 crossing Grenache and Petit Bousche. The result was a grape of deeper color and quality than the originals. Was planted all over Burgundy and Bordeaux post phyloxera. Is used most often in blending with other grapes. In Spain it has become an important grape in south eastern Spain in the region of the Levante. Region in Spain where the local weather system hits the coast in south eastern Spain. Great for making wine. This grape is planted heavily in Almansa and Jumilla. The vineyard parcel where this wine comes from borders the region of Almansa. The beauty of the vineyard is what attracted us to the wine. Vineyards are 50 to 60 years of age and it was only a matter of chance that we saw the vineyard when visiting another site we had been told about. The vineyard is surrounded by mountains with excellent drainage. We asked the winemaker what grapes these were he told us tintorera that he used only for blending and we asked him to make us a wine from only this grape and he thought we were mad. He made some samples and the wine was tremendous superbly rich, inky black, glorious fresh fruit and offers insane value for money. Definitely improves with time to open. Keeps inviting you back for more. Superb. A bouquet reminiscent of a great Chateaunuef du Pape. The palate is infused with black raspberries and blueberry and finish with nice grip.
Expect raspberry scented fruit with a dazzling kirsch and cherry fruit core on palate.
This is a wine which could very easily be left in a dark cellar to be transformed from a vibrant young wine into an altogether softer and more complex beast.
Lovely natural intensity.
