93 Pts Wine Spectator Tasting Notes: Dark ruby with an opaque core, this lovely wine reveals aromas of raspberry, blackberry, pepper, spices, and minerals with scents of aromatic herbs, and mocha/cacao on the nose. Spending 24 months in new French oak, the wine is soft and lush on the attack, and offers pure dark fruit flavors, round tannins and a long persistent finish. Still very young and requires at least a couple of years of aging. 92 Pts WA Tasting Notes: Dark ruby with an opaque core, this lovely wine reveals aromas of raspberry, blackberry, pepper, spices, and minerals with scents of aromatic herbs, and mocha/cacao on the nose. CHATEAU BELLE-VUE 2008

90 Pts RP r 90 pts Parker
A Spectacular Expression Of Bordeaux
Neighboring Margaux’s Giscours At A Fraction Of the Price
We have been tasting a fortune of Bordeaux, there is no question about the greatness of the 2009’s but through our tastings we have found some spectacular 2008’s that are undervalued, that are starting to show superbly and if you give them a good breathe will offer you insane Bordeaux drinking pleasure of the highest caliber. One of these is the 2008 Chateau Belle-Vue from the Medoc. The wine is brought to us by Bordeaux visionary, Jeffrey Davies. Parker calls Jeffrey, The Stealth Broker of Bordeaux. Bordeaux is a very closed, conservative society dominated by brokers who have alliances with Chateau’s. Jeffrey, a US born in San Francisco has been able to succeed in this environment and brings in some of the greatest values from Bordeaux to be had. He focuses on small producers who believe in hand harvested fruit, low yields and minimal intervention in the winery. What brought Chateau Belle-Vue to my attention is that a mere drainage ditch separates it from the great Margaux Appellation and in particular Chateau Giscours, a classified growth that is far more money. The terroir is this area is unique being one of the earliest ripening areas in Bordeaux, featuring deep gravelly soils, excellent drainage and cool nights. Earlier ripening allows this area to produce superior quality in vintages where Bordeaux had trouble ripening to perfection like 2008. The levels of fruit concentration were extremely impressive. The wine also has large component of Petit Verdot which adds to fruit and bouquet. The wine was included in “Today’s Top Bordeaux Under Thirty Five” a huge honor. Parker loved the wine giving it 90 pts and declaring the wine a ‘sleeper’ of the vintage.

The wines comes from 30 year old vines, planted in deep, gravelly soils with 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, and 20% Petit Verdot. Situated just south of a jalle (drainage ditch) that separates Belle-Vue from Giscours. Yields in 2010 were 47 hls/ha. Mechanical tilling and cover-cropping; debudding, deleafing, and crop-thinning. Hand-harvested between Sept. 28th and Oct. 6th for the Merlot, Oct. 12th and 16th for the Petit Verdot and Oct. 15th and 21st for the Cabernet Sauvignon. Table-sorted and, after a 25-day cold soak @ 0-3° C, fermented in stainless with long, 50-day maceration with frequent, gravity-driven, délestages; aging projected for 15 months in 40% new, and 60% one-wine old, barrels from François Frères (50%), Cadus (20%), Taransaud (20%), and Sylvain (10%).

A sleeper of the vintage, this outstanding, over-achieving estate in the southern Medoc continues to turn out beautifully crafted wines. The 2008, a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and a whopping 20% Petit Verdot, displays a deep ruby/purple hue, a sweet bouquet of blueberries, incense, spice, and spring flowers. Pure with good acidity, sweet tannin, and beautiful density given the low yields, it should drink well for 3-4 years. Drinking window now through 2017.

BRITTAN VINEYARDS GESTALT BLOCK PINOT NOIR
sku # 2478801
Red Wine Hand-Picked
93 Pts RP r 93 pts Parker

I have been waiting for this to come in and it has finally arrived, a Pinot Noir from Oregon that can give the great Burgs a run for their money. Parker’s WA calls this wine one of the stars of the vintage, beautifully proportioned and exceptionally lengthy. These adjectives are normally reserved for $100 plus Pinot’s but not this time, the 2009 Brittan Pinot Noir Gestalt Block from the McMinnville AVA in Willamette Valley is a stunner, 93 pts by Parker and by the case under fifty bucks a bottle. This is as good as Oregon Pinot Noir gets. The wine public loves Oregon Pinot Noir because it combines so well the depth and complexity and earthy tones of great red Burgundy with added fruit concentration and approachableness that the new world offers. The wine is made by veteran Winemaker Robert Britton who after thirty years of making wine in Napa (Farniente and Stags Leap Winery) decided to move to Willamette to make Pinot Noir and the results are spectacular. His wines have become some of the most sought after Oregon Pinots and very hard to get. He spent years selecting the perfect hillside slope. He makes two Cuvees from the site. The Gestalt comes from the West facing most exposed block in the vineyard resulting in a wine that will always be transparent to its vintage and unique to the site. These southwestern facing blocks stare down the arriving storms from the Pacific as they travel through the Van Duzer corridor. 2009 was a warm vintage resulting in beautifully complex and balanced wine with rich, ripe flavors. The length on this wine blew me away, a great Pinot Noir at the price.

Tasting Notes: Parkers WA: The same can be said for the 2009 Pinot Noir Gestalt Block. It is more expressive aromatically with hints of red licorice, tobacco leaf, spice box, black cherry, and black raspberry. Intense, concentrated, and vibrant on the palate, this elegant, suave Pinot is beautifully proportioned and exceptionally lengthy. It is one of the stars of the vintage.Brittan: Beautifully complex and balanced wine of rich, ripe flavors dominated by black cherry and red plum, along with spicy notes of sweet cinnamon and cardamom, and just a hint of savory tobacco.
