Red Wine Hand-Picked 95 Pts RP r <b>Tasting Notes:</b> The 2006 Barolo Garblet Sue’ is massively tannic and powerful. As always, it is a taut, sinewy Barolo, but in 2006 the Garblet Sue’ is even more backward than is typically the case. Bright red fruit, smoke, tar, incense and iron are just some of the nuances that come together in this focused, potent Barolo. With air the frame fills out to some extent, but patience is the key. Brovia’s Garblet Sue’ is made from the Bricco Fiasco vineyard, just up the hill from the winery. Anticipated maturity: 2021-2036.<br><br>The 2006 Barolo Garblet Sue possesses a deep, penetrating core of bright red fruit, enshrouded by a potent wall of tannins. There is terrific density and richness in the glass, all kept in check by the linear focus that is the hallmark of Barolos from the Bricco Fiasco vineyard. This, too, is from Castiglione Falletto, but like the two preceding wines in this line-up, the Garblet Sue’ speaks with its own distinct voice. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031.

The flavors are impeccably balanced and filled with delicious earthy, clean truffle tones, deep blackberry jam, spice, and a whiff of cherry pipe tobacco smoke.<br><br>One of the sleeper Barolos of the vintage, Icardi's explosive, full-bodied, exotic, dense purple-colored 1997 Barolo Parej boasts a jammy blackberry/cherry bouquet with notions of toasty new oak (clearly from the modern school of Piedmontese winemaking). There is terrific density, purity, and symmetry as well as an unctuous, long finish with copious quantities of sweet tannin and glycerin. Drink this Nebbiolo fruit bomb over the next 15-18 years.

Red Wine Hand-Picked 97 Pts RP r The 2006 Barolo Lazzarito has begun to show the pedigree of this great Serralunga site now that Vietti has backed off the French oak, and the 2006 is nothing short of superb. A melange of dark, mineral-infused fruit flows from the glass as the large-scaled Lazzarito gradually shows off its class. Licorice, tar, smoke and earthiness add layers of complexity and nuance. The Lazzarito is still the Barolo that spends the longest number of months in French oak following the malolactic fermentation, but that period is down to several months from a full year the wine spent in small barrels up until 2001 or so. One day the Lazzarito may challenge the Rocche as Vietti’s signature Barolo, and that day may be closer than most people realize. This huge, imposing Barolo will require patience, but it is nothing short of superb. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031.

Red Wine Hand-Picked 95 Pts RP r The 2006 Barolo Brunate is a fat, juicy wine that comes across as more immediate than some of the other Barolos in this line-up. Smoke, tar and licorice meld into a core of gloriously ripe fruit. There is incredible density and richness to the Brunate, qualities that carry through to the impeccably round, harmonious finish. The Brunate sees a fermentation/maceration lasting roughly 21 days, which is the shortest among the estate’s single-vineyard Barolos, but not entirely surprising for a wine made from this site, which lies on the La Morra/Barolo border. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031.

Red Wine Hand-Picked 97 Pts RP r The 2006 Barolo Brunate-Le Coste flows from the glass with tons of dark fruit wrapped around a deep, muscular core. I am too young to have tasted the 1989 when it was first released, but I imagine it might very well have been like this. The sheer density of the fruit is remarkable, while the wine’s balance is first-rate. With time, sweet balsamic mentholated notes appear, along with spices, violets, leather and licorice, all supported by the wine’s muscular, broad-shouldered frame. This is a classic among classics and a must-have wine for anyone serious about great Barolo. The more it sat in the glass, the more I loved it. Anticipated maturity: 2026-2046.
