In order to purchase fine wines, one must have a general understanding of how to read the label. Sounds simple right? Wrong. With so many languages, regions, vineyards, and government designations,
reading a wine label can be somewhat confusing. Hopefully, the following tips
will help make the process a bit easier. No matter the language in which the label is written, somewhere the name of the grape will likely be identifiable. Knowing the name of the grape is important because it helps you to recognize the type of wine. One glance at the contents of the bottle will help you determine the color of the wine (that's step one). On the label, words like Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Gewurztraminer, Pinot
Noir, and more will help you figure out the type of wine it is.
Here again, look carefully at the label: although the words might not be written in English, one can get a sense of the country of origin from the root of the words. You don't have to read fluent Italian, for instance, to surmise that the word
"Italiano" on a label means that the bottle is, in fact, from Italy.
