White Wine Hand-Picked 97 Pts RP r From Rock-Star Winemaker and Visionary Greg Brewer who also makes the great Brewer - Clifton and Melville wines. Recognized as the master of the central coast's Santa Barbara County.
The 2009 Chardonnay Huber, from an old Wente clone that boasts 24 years of age, is the purest, most grand cru like of all these wines. Lemon and lime blossoms intermixed with nectarine, tangerine, honey, and powdered rock are all present in this full-bodied (15.9% alcohol), exquisite Chardonnay that proves that blockbuster power and quintessential finesse can be one and the same thing in a wine. It should drink well for 3-4 years.
This brilliant artisinal project of Greg Brewer continues to offer what are basically the naked/most virginal side of Chardonnay possible – all from cool-climate sites in the Santa Rita Hills. As I said last year, these tour de force efforts prove you can have extraordinary precision, minerality, and freshness in wines that usually have around 15% natural alcohol. As a postscript, these wines are all fermented at very cold temperatures, with malolactic fermentation blocked, and kept cold on their lees until bottling, which is very early. No one else in California is doing anything remotely like what Greg Brewer has achieved with Diatom.

Red Wine Hand-Picked 97 Pts RP r Tasting Notes :Ripe blackberry and blueberry fruit flavors are syrupy and almost jammy, but retain enough acidity for balance in this plush, modern red. The big tannins are ripe and well-integrated, and spicy, mocha-tinged oak frames the fruit.

Red Wine Hand-Picked 97 Pts RP r Recioto is Valpolicella’s initial incarnation—a sweet wine that dates back to the Romans, who are credited with having developed the appassimento process (drying of the grapes). The sweetness derives from an arrested fermentation, a procedure that stops the conversion of sugar into alcohol, thereby leaving residual sugar. It is widely believed that Amarone emerged as the dry counterpart to Recioto when an unattended barrel of the latter fermented fully. For Giuseppe, like his father, the challenge of crafting Recioto represents a labor of love. Following the arrested fermentation, this wine’s vinification regimen follows the same protocol utilized for the Amarone.

Red Wine Hand-Picked 97 Pts RP r Tasting Notes :Certainly one of the vintage’s most colossal wines and clearly one of the estate’s greatest efforts, rivaling the 1989, 1990, and 2000, this wine, which tips the scales at 13% alcohol (the 1990 was 13.5%), has an amazingly opaque purple color to the rim, and a big, sweet, exotic nose of blackberry liqueur intermixed with acacia flower, creme de cassis, smoke, and hints of truffle and vanilla. In the mouth the wine is full-bodied, opulent, but offers surprising definition and finesse, which is something it was showing less of nine months ago. Brilliantly delineated in spite of its amazing concentration and unctuosity, this is a thrilling, exceptional effort that should prove to be a modern-day legend. I tend to think this wine will actually be approachable in 5-6 years but capable of lasting for at least three decades
