Pre-Sell Red Wine Hand-Picked 97 Pts RP r Tasting Notes: Two luxury cuvees include the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee du Quet (a perfect wine in 2007 and not far off that mark in 2009). A blend of 80% tank-aged Grenache and 20% small barrel-aged Mourvedre, it is a super-concentrated wine with layer upon layer of rich blackberry and kirsch notes intermixed with charcoal, incense, truffles and lavender. Very full-bodied with silky tannins, a multilayered mouthfeel as well as a stunning 40+ second finish, this killer Chateauneuf du Pape is one of the vintage’s great stars. It should drink well for two decades. The brother and sister team of Daniel and Christine Chaussy has been on top of its game for many years. Their greatest wines to date, the 2007s, have been followed by brilliant performances in 2009 as well as the excellent Chateauneuf du Papes made in the challenging 2008 vintage.

Red Wine Hand-Picked 97 Pts RP r The 2006 Barolo Lazzarito has begun to show the pedigree of this great Serralunga site now that Vietti has backed off the French oak, and the 2006 is nothing short of superb. A melange of dark, mineral-infused fruit flows from the glass as the large-scaled Lazzarito gradually shows off its class. Licorice, tar, smoke and earthiness add layers of complexity and nuance. The Lazzarito is still the Barolo that spends the longest number of months in French oak following the malolactic fermentation, but that period is down to several months from a full year the wine spent in small barrels up until 2001 or so. One day the Lazzarito may challenge the Rocche as Vietti’s signature Barolo, and that day may be closer than most people realize. This huge, imposing Barolo will require patience, but it is nothing short of superb. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031.

Red Wine Hand-Picked 97 Pts RP r Tasting NoteS: Rivals some of the greatest wine I’ve tasted. Needs to open up and show itself. Its bouquet is ethereal with an array of dark berries, florals, minerals and oak. Has spectacular complexity on the palate and in the nose that develops and changes as the wine opens up and develops. I loved the depth and the finesse and the length on the finish just goes on and on and on. This is truly a rare and unique experience in wine. It really blows my mind how something 33 years old can remain so alive, almost youthful and completely intact. Enjoy! I did.

Full-bodied, dense and rich, it is just beginning to reveal some secondary nuances as well as complexity. There are 940 cases of this big, rich 2007 that should continue to drink well for two decades.

Red Wine Hand-Picked 97 Pts RP r Recioto is Valpolicella’s initial incarnation—a sweet wine that dates back to the Romans, who are credited with having developed the appassimento process (drying of the grapes). The sweetness derives from an arrested fermentation, a procedure that stops the conversion of sugar into alcohol, thereby leaving residual sugar. It is widely believed that Amarone emerged as the dry counterpart to Recioto when an unattended barrel of the latter fermented fully. For Giuseppe, like his father, the challenge of crafting Recioto represents a labor of love. Following the arrested fermentation, this wine’s vinification regimen follows the same protocol utilized for the Amarone.

Red Wine Hand-Picked 97 Pts RP r The 2000 Unico is deep crimson-colored with an ethereal perfume aided by its extended upbringing. Aromas of Asian spices, lavender, incense, truffle, and confiture of black fruits are compelling. Sweet, forward, rich, and hedonistic, it nevertheless has the balance and structure to continue evolving for another 5-10 years. In strong vintages Vega Sicilia drinks well at age 50 and I would expect the same of the 2000.

Bodegas Vega Sicilia remains a benchmark for the world’s great red wines. The Valbuena bottling receives 3 years in barrel and 2 years in bottle prior to release. On the occasion of my visit in May 2010, the three Reserva Especials already in bottle and awaiting release were tasted side by side. They are identified (for the purposes of this review only) as the 2013 Release, the 2012 Release, and the 2011 Release. I was not told what vintages are in each bottling but it actually makes little difference. The Reserva Especials are blended to a house style designed to reflect Vega Sicilia at its very best. The vagaries of vintage (as reflected in Unico) are blended away leaving a wine that is, in my opinion, better than any of the single vintage wines with the possible exception of the 1942.

Red Wine Hand-Picked 97 Pts RP r The 2006 Barolo Brunate-Le Coste flows from the glass with tons of dark fruit wrapped around a deep, muscular core. I am too young to have tasted the 1989 when it was first released, but I imagine it might very well have been like this. The sheer density of the fruit is remarkable, while the wine’s balance is first-rate. With time, sweet balsamic mentholated notes appear, along with spices, violets, leather and licorice, all supported by the wine’s muscular, broad-shouldered frame. This is a classic among classics and a must-have wine for anyone serious about great Barolo. The more it sat in the glass, the more I loved it. Anticipated maturity: 2026-2046.
