Red Wine Hand-Picked 95 Pts Wine Spectator On a hillside in Montalcino lies CastelGiocondo, an ancient fortress built in 1100s to defend the road between Siena and the sea. The area is well-suited to the production ogf great red wines, particularly Brunello di Montalcino, which has been produced at CastelGiocondo since the late 18000s.The varying altitudes give CastelGiocondo a significant variety of soils, which can be characterized as four main types: galestro, clayey marls, conglomerates and sandy mixtures.<p>The 2004 harvest has been a very good one. The sunny days of the second half of September have been further favoring flavor and color concentration in grapes. Furthermore the deep thermal variations between day and night have given the wine complex and different aromas. Tannins contained in the grape stones have taken advantage of sun and mild temperature of this period and have allowed a slow and organic evolution of the grapes, which will result in high elegance of th wine.<p><b>Tasting Notes:</b>Shows a complex nose of blackberry, tanned leather, sandalwood and cedar. Fascinating. Full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and a long, long finish. Concentrated yet balanced. Beautiful and complete. Best after 2011. 17,000 cases made

It is aged half in large wood foudres and the other half in 600-litre demi-miuds. This wine may turn out to be their best since their debut release of this cuvee in 1990. Full-bodied, with notes of kirsch, incense, black currant, cassis, plum, fig, and roasted Provencal herbs as well as some meaty juices, the wine is layered, dense, sexy, decadently rich and powerful, but incredibly well-balanced because of the freshness of the fruit in this vintage. This wine should age magnificently for 20+ years..

Prior to their purchase of the property, appallingly diluted, vegetal, fruitless, charmless wines were produced, but they have turned Smith-Haut-Lafitte into a showcase Pessac-Leognan. The inky/blue/purple-tinged 2005's extraordinary nose reeks of charcoal, incense, scorched earth, abundant blackberry, blueberry, and cherry fruit, toast, and spice. Red Wine Hand-Picked 95 Pts RP r <b>95+ Points Parker Priced Up To $150 <p>Tasting Notes:</b> This is a wine for readers with incredibly long life-expectancies as it possesses the power and longevity associated with many pre-phylloxera, 19th century wines of Bordeaux. Like so many of the small St.-Emilion estates, there are no compromises at Clos de Sarpe. The 2005 was hand-harvested from yields of 25 hectoliters per hectare, given a 55-day maceration, and aged in a combination of new wood. It will be bottled unfiltered. The wine achieved 14+% alcohol naturally. This opaque purple-colored, massive, ferociously tannic offering reveals scary concentration levels, huge dry extract, and technical numbers that are off the charts. Despite its impressive credentials, size, richness, and overall balance, it will close down after bottling, and re-emerge 10-15 years later. My conservative guess is that this gigantic, colossal St.-Emilion will be drinkable around 2015-2020, and last for 40-50 years.
