Red Wine Hand-Picked 93 Pts WE Tasting Notes: Aromas of boysenberry, raspberry, and fresh black and white pepper are wrapped in dark baking chocolate and spices on the nose and translate through to the palate. A solid tannin structure integrates throughout but does not overpower this nearly full bodied dark and brooding Zin. With generous complexity and red fruit concentration the long finish is enhanced by barrel spice, vanilla and coconut notes imparted by the American Oak used to age this wine. Recommended drinking time is three to five years from vintage with a maximum suggested aging time of eight to ten years from vintage. We also recommend decanting this wine for about an hour prior to drinking.

Red Wine Hand-Picked 93 Pts Wine Spectator I am a big fan of Ribera del Duero as it gives me a more obvious and hedonistic expression of Tempranillo. The estates have adopted the new world approach to winemaking and vineyard management. And in my eyes, the wines are dependably delicious. Bodegas Felix Callejo is all of these descriptors.
Callejo is in its’ fourth generation of growing grapes in Sotillo de la Ribera, the very heart of Ribera del Duero, farming 60 hectares of 25 to 50 year old vines. The Bodegas was founded in 1989 in a step of independence from selling grapes to the local coop. In 1999, they updated the winery with new stainless steel tanks for fermenting and started a regime of introducing new French and American oak for their wines. At 30 years old, Jose Felix Callejo manages the vision of the vineyards and winery and is living his dream.
Yields are limited naturally by the hard continental climate and a poor soil of low fertility. On top of that they practice strict green pruning and selection resulting with an average of only 8 bunches per plant. The vines are planted at almost 2800 feet elevation, some of the highest planted in the region, and don't receive any artificial irrigation. No pesticides or chemical fertilizers are used in the Estate.
At harvest, the grapes are hand harvested into small 30 lb so there is no danger of having the grape skins break and sparking an undesired premature fermentation. The crates are taken directly to the winery, where they go through two triage tables, the second one selecting grape by grape and discarding any imperfect ones. The Crianza is made from vines that are at least 35 years old. After a stainless steel fermentation, the wines is moved into 70% new French oak and 30% American oak for 12 months of aging. After bottling, the wine is put back into the cellar for another year to settle and further develop.
Tasting Notes : This modern red marries cocoa-dusted oak with ripe fruit flavors of blackberry and black cherry, along with the mineral and light earthy notes typical of the region. Well-structured but accessible now. Drink now through 2015. 200 cases imported.

Red Wine Hand-Picked 94 Pts RP r Tasting Notes -Parker :The 2005 Finca Sandoval is 76% Syrah, 13% Mourvedre, and 11% Bobal fermented with native yeasts followed by malolactic fermentation in barrel with lees stirring, followed by aging from 11-13 months in French and American oak, a mix of new and seasoned 225 and 300-liter barrels. Purple-colored, the wine offers up an alluring nose of toasty oak, mineral, floral notes, blueberry, and blackberry. This leads to a full-bodied, ripe, layered wine with superb integration of oak, tannin, and acidity. There is enough structure to support 3-5 years of evolution in the cellar. This outstanding effort should be at its best between 2012 and 2025.
Tasting Notes -Tanzer : Inky purple. Sharply focused raspberry and blackberry scents are complemented by fresh flowers, licorice and graphite. Crisp and poised, offering intense, finely focused red and dark fruit flavors, and impressively silky texture and fully absorbed tannins. Fresh and energetic on the long, spicy finish. I suspect that this extremely impressive, syrah-based wine will put on weight and gain sweetness with a couple years of aging. 93 Pts ST Tasting Notes -Parker :The 2005 Finca Sandoval is 76% Syrah, 13% Mourvedre, and 11% Bobal fermented with native yeasts followed by malolactic fermentation in barrel with lees stirring, followed by aging from 11-13 months in French and American oak, a mix of new and seasoned 225 and 300-liter barrels. Red Wine Hand-Picked 93 Pts Wine Spectator The Rioja Mayor Reserva 2004 is Tempranillo, blended with Mazuelo, grapes selected from low yielding vines in Viana picked when overripe. The characteristics of the 2004 harvest were particularly good, producing a ripe, concentrated berry. Twenty-one months in oak from Missouri and central France, naturally fined with a series of successive rackings the wine is a deep cherry red color with inky hues. Its bouquet is fruity with spices and a smoky aroma on the nose. In the mouth it has backbone and lots of concentration, which bodes well for a long life.

Red Wine Hand-Picked 93 Pts RP r Tasting Notes:Robert Parker-The 2005 Barolo Castelletto is the sweetest and richest of these offerings. Made in a round, generous style, the Castelletto flows onto the palate with an explosive array of dark red fruit. Sweet medicinal herbs, licorice and spices emerge with notable clarity on the long finish. The Castelletto can be enjoyed today for its exuberant, textured fruit, or cellared for those who prefer more tertiary complexity. Either way, it is a beautiful 2005 Barolo. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2025.
Wine Spectator:Berries, tar and dried mushroom on the nose. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and serious concentration. Red Wine Hand-Picked 93 Pts RP r Tasting Notes:The 2005 Barolo Bricco Boschis is gorgeous and linear in its expressive aromatics and focused core of fruit. Medium in body, the wine reveals outstanding balance and depth, with gorgeous inner perfume and a long, refined close. Sweet notes of menthol, raspberries and spices linger on the finish. The 2005 doesn’t have the sheer exuberance of the 2004 and the firm tannins might make this wine hard to fully appreciate in its infancy, but with some time in bottle, this, too, will very likely develop into a gem. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025.
