Pre-Sell Red Wine Hand-Picked 93 Pts Wine Spectator Regular Price $24, Our Price $19.99,
93pts Spectator #26 Top 100

This polished red shows density and harmony, delivering complex, well-integrated flavors of mineral, wild berry, fresh herbs and smoke. Not showy, but has character. Drink now through 2018. The new releases (all 100% Mencia) include the entry-level 2009 Petalos del Bierzo sourced mainly from leased vineyards with vine age ranging from 40-90 years. It was aged for a few weeks in new French barriques followed by 6-10 months in seasoned barrels. It shows lovely density and purity in an up-front style. Dark black cherries, violets, and Asian spices perch on a medium-bodied frame with well integrated oak and an elegant personality. With excellent volume and length, it is a classy introduction to what can be achieved in the DO of Bierzo. Descendientes de Jose Palacios was founded in 1998 by Alvaro Palacios and Ricardo Perez. The estate has steep hillside vineyards ranging in age from 60-100 years planted to 100% Mencia, the indigenous grape of cool-climate Bierzo. The vineyards are biodynamically farmed and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration. It, along with the Bierzo wines of Raul Perez, is arguably the finest in the DO.

PRESELL, ARRIVING END OF FEBRUARY

Red Wine Hand-Picked 93 Pts Wine Spectator The 2006 vintage in Tuscany was a warm and sunny year but slightly cooler than traditional top years, so the prolonged maturation cycle for the grapes greatly benefited the hilly vineyards of Chianti Classico, especially Greve native Sangiovese di Lamole which makes up the majority of this awesome 2006 Chianti Classico Riserva, along with 5% input from Merlot.

Tasting Notes: Fabulous aromas of blackberry, dark chocolate and flowers follow through to a full-bodied palate, with supersilky tannins and amazing richness and subtlety. Goes on for minutes on the palate. Best from 2010 through 2015. 2,345 cases made.

Red Wine Hand-Picked 93 Pts RP r Tasting Notes: The 2009 Barbera d’Alba Piani is fabulous. Freshly cut flowers, red fruit and spices are just some of the nuances that flow from this pliant, hugely delicious Barbera. A hint of oak frames the finish, but the Piani is really about fruit. It is a beautifully balanced, totally harmonious wine of the highest level. I loved it. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. 93 pts WA

Red Wine Hand-Picked 93 Pts Wine Spectator I am a big fan of Ribera del Duero as it gives me a more obvious and hedonistic expression of Tempranillo. The estates have adopted the new world approach to winemaking and vineyard management. And in my eyes, the wines are dependably delicious. Bodegas Felix Callejo is all of these descriptors.
Callejo is in its’ fourth generation of growing grapes in Sotillo de la Ribera, the very heart of Ribera del Duero, farming 60 hectares of 25 to 50 year old vines. The Bodegas was founded in 1989 in a step of independence from selling grapes to the local coop. In 1999, they updated the winery with new stainless steel tanks for fermenting and started a regime of introducing new French and American oak for their wines. At 30 years old, Jose Felix Callejo manages the vision of the vineyards and winery and is living his dream.
Yields are limited naturally by the hard continental climate and a poor soil of low fertility. On top of that they practice strict green pruning and selection resulting with an average of only 8 bunches per plant. The vines are planted at almost 2800 feet elevation, some of the highest planted in the region, and don't receive any artificial irrigation. No pesticides or chemical fertilizers are used in the Estate.
At harvest, the grapes are hand harvested into small 30 lb so there is no danger of having the grape skins break and sparking an undesired premature fermentation. The crates are taken directly to the winery, where they go through two triage tables, the second one selecting grape by grape and discarding any imperfect ones. The Crianza is made from vines that are at least 35 years old. After a stainless steel fermentation, the wines is moved into 70% new French oak and 30% American oak for 12 months of aging. After bottling, the wine is put back into the cellar for another year to settle and further develop.
Tasting Notes: This modern red marries cocoa-dusted oak with ripe fruit flavors of blackberry and black cherry, along with the mineral and light earthy notes typical of the region. Well-structured but accessible now. Drink now through 2015. 200 cases imported.

Red Wine Hand-Picked 93 Pts Wine Spectator Tasting Notes: Fabrizio Dionisio has now owned the estate of Il Castagno for forty years. In keeping with his artisan game plan, Dionisio has given artisanal master Attilio Pagli full rein to hand harvest in small crates with soft pressing, vinifying in-steel at controlled temperatures. This has a complex, deep and fascinating nose of tar, grilled meat, blackberry and plum. Full-bodied, with gorgeous fruit and velvety tannins. Finishes with wonderful multi-layers of character, from clove and meat to coffee and berries. Best after 2010. JS

Sweet cherry and plum flavors are offset by licorice, spice and a hint of tar in this structured red. This is dense, showing some grain to the muscular tannins, superb depth ending with a long aftertaste. Best from 2013 through 2026. 750 cases imported. –BS

It further raises the bar with its saturated, glass-coating purple color, super-expressive, exotic nose of pain grille, spice box, wild blueberry, smoked meat, and licorice. On the palate, this thick and opulent wine has gobs of spicy black fruit flavors, enough structure for 4-6 years of further evolution, and a beautifully delineated, long finish. It should drink well through 2020. A true “garage” Bodegas (the winery is in a garage in the town of Roa), these small production cuvees of 100% Tempranillo are uniformly outstanding.”

The wine was aged for 11 months in new and seasoned French and American oak. It offers up a brooding bouquet of underbrush, mineral, spice box, blueberry, and blackberry. Packed and impeccably balanced, this savory, layered effort is surprisingly forward for its size. It can be approached now but will be better with 2-3 years of additional cellaring.

The native grape of Mt. Etna, Nerello Mascalese comes to life in this glass with aromatics of candied raspberry and mulling spice. Concentrated raspberry becomes more pronounced on the palate along with inviting cherry and licorice back tones. The wine finishes with focused elegance, showcasing chiseled minerality that melds together with mouthwatering acidity. Don’t be fooled by the translucent hue, this effort has great depth and layers.

Red Wine Hand-Picked 93 Pts Wine Spectator Tasting Notes: The Rioja Mayor Reserva 2004 is Tempranillo, blended with Mazuelo, grapes selected from low yielding vines in Viana picked when overripe. The characteristics of the 2004 harvest were particularly good, producing a ripe, concentrated berry. Twenty-one months in oak from Missouri and central France, naturally fined with a series of successive rackings the wine is a deep cherry red color with inky hues. Its bouquet is fruity with spices and a smoky aroma on the nose. In the mouth it has backbone and lots of concentration, which bodes well for a long life.

This harmony of man and nature comes through in the delicious, ripe and balanced wines produced here, available at prices that are incredibly low when compared to those of the more established producers of Montalcino. The wines are particularly approachable when young, well-structured with ample body and an elegant, minerally character distinct to this growing area. Situated to the southwest of Montalcino at an altitude of 300-350 meters above sea-level on the slopes facing Castiglione del Bosco, the Mocali estate is comprised of 32 hectares, 6 of which are specialized vineyards (5 Hectares of Sangiovese grosso), and 4 dedicated to olive groves. As over half of the estate is covered by a vegetation characteristic to the hill on which Montalcino stands, the vineyards and olive groves alternate with a landscape of woodland of ilex, oak and arbutus. The soil is rendered highly mineral; salt owing to the presence of marl and limestone. Not being overly large, the Mocali estate lies under family management with the consultation of an expert oenologist.

The wines have been getting excellent press of late.
