Tasting Notes: Giuseppe Gorelli is one of the great younger producers in Montalcino and since 1988 has not missed a step making spectaular Brunellos. Gorelli makes wines of flawless quality with distinctive character and personality on a very small scale. The family originally established their reputation for great Brunello di Montalcino at the "Due Portine" property, which belongs to his father Giancarlo; 1998 Brunello was Giuseppe’s last bottling from that property. Now that the estate of Giancarlo has merged with that of son Giuseppe, all releases come from the family’s "Le Potazzine" vineyards, located in two areas of Montalcino. Gorelli has commented that he believed that his 2006 would evovle into his best vintage ever. This tiny estate is named after a local bird, the Potazzine. Gorelli comes from a long line of Brunello producers. He has decided to go back to Slovenian oak as he felt aging in New French added too much of a wood component. I tend to agree with him.
