93 pts Parker
One of the great Napa Cabs from this incredible vintage. Parkers highest rated ever. Spectator vintage of the decade and 99 pts. We found Penche through the Wine Spectator Article New Faces Of Napa which focuses on the new top producers. In 1999, Scott and Pauline Asbill purchased a home with 4 acres of grapes in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley. First the couple sold their grapes, but after meeting with winemaker Jay Buoncristiani in 2005, they decided to create their own label. They named it Penché, French for leaning or tilting, a reference to a 300-year-old oak tree that leans dramatically on the property. In this spectacular vintage we were very honored to be able to offer their tiny production Cabernet.
Tasting Notes:
Dark garnet hue; Deeply layered aromas of cassis, blueberry, chocolate, toasty French oak, sweet vanilla, cedar, floral perfume, rosemary, anise, and black pepper. Expect a big, full and rich mid palate density laced with intense flavors of ripe blackberries, black cherry, integrated toasty oak and mouth-coating chocolate. The persistent yet balanced finish exhibits excellent depth, purity and elegance. Winemarker, Jay Buoncristiani.
Robert parker: A brilliant effort, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits more blueberry, black raspberry, and floral notes intertwined with underbrush and foresty characteristics that suggest a cool climate Cabernet Sauvignon. With impressive finesse, concentration, and substance, it should provide immense pleasure over the next two decades. I enjoyed the combination of gracefulness plus power that these wines offer. They all reveal freshness, intensity, and beautiful purity.
