A Glorious Barbera From Giorgio Pelissero

Giorgio Pelissero is on a roll! He is a good friend of Grapes and we a do a tasting with him for our customers about once a year focusing on his Barbaresco's. He is famous for making one of the all-time greats single vineyard Barbaresco's called Vanotou. Recently all his wines have been getting huge press and just this morning I tasted his 2009 Pelissero Barbera d'Alba Piani and it is spectacular. Parkers WA loved it too, giving the wine 93 pts and at the price of $23.99, this is the highest rated most reasonably priced wine he recommended from Italy in his latest edition. Parkers WA comments, "These are among the finest wines I have tasted from Giorgio Pelissero". If you love big, rich reds than Barbera is for you. Opulent dark berry fruit, big concentration, toasty oak and extremely supple on the back end. The bouquet jumps from the glass showing ripe raspberry, strawberry and bittersweet chocolate. This is a magnificent red for the money. This is a single vineyard wine coming from the Piani vineyard on the Pelissero Estate. Production is only 1500 cases a year and is one of best expressions of Barbera d'Alba available and at a fraction of the price of its closest competitors.

Tasting Notes: The 2009 Barbera d’Alba Piani is fabulous. Freshly cut flowers, red fruit and spices are just some of the nuances that flow from this pliant, hugely delicious Barbera. A hint of oak frames the finish, but the Piani is really about fruit. It is a beautifully balanced, totally harmonious wine of the highest level. I loved it. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019.
