The Nebbiolo grape that goes into the great Barbaresco and Barolo's from Piedmont age out better than just about any other grape. They improve dramatically with time in the bottle. The wine comes from one of the great classic, traditional producers whose wines need time in the cellar to show themselves. Oddero is a historic name among Barolo producers. 18th century municipal records show that the vineyards and estate have belonged to the Oddero family for centuries. The 1998 Oddero Barolo is a blend of their great single vineyard properties, Rocche, Monduca and Vigna Rionda. During the winemaking process each single vineyard is kept separate. The wine is aged in 40 hectoliter French oak for 30 months and are then aged a further 6 months in the bottle prior to release. This is a great example of Barolo that is drinking gloriously.
