There is a quality revolution going on in Paso Robles. There are some serious people making some serious wine in this area. Houses like David Bruce; Justin and L'Aventure are making world class red wine from Paso. The up and comer from the region is a Winery called Niner. Richard Niner a succesful turn around guy out of Princeton and Harvard Business School started the Estate back in 2001. I recently tasted through their portfolio and the wine I found to be truly spectaular is the 2008 Sangiovese from Boot Jack Ranch. Sangiovese is the grape of Tuscany, of Brunello and just like other varietals from around the world have been planted in California. There are some great Sangiovese from California, Altamura and Leonetti comes to mind and the Niner is right up there at a fraction of the price. Boot Jack Ranch is in the finest zone in Paso on Hwy 46 East and they hired legendary winemaker Chuck Ortman to advise.
Tasting Notes: The 2008 Sangiovese is big and complex, boasting a broad mix of fruit and spice/herb flavors. Blackberry and black cherry are the most prominent fruit flavors in the glass. Spice, licorice and fennel balance the fruit nicely, while white chocolate and cocoa fill the mid palate. All of this is brought together by a rich crème fraiche mouthfeel and a juicy, mouthwatering acidity.
