95 Pts RP r <b>Tasting Notes:</b> The 2005 Calchetas is composed of 50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 15% Malbec aged for 19 months in 500-liter French oak. Opaque purple-colored, it delivers a complex perfume of pain grille, mineral, earth, spice box, black currant, and black cherry. Bordering on opulent, with layers of ripe, sweet fruit and great balance, this full-flavored effort needs 4-6 years of additional cellaring to reveal its full potential. It will be at its best from 2015-2030.

My focus and reason for the trip was to taste the 2010 vintage, some were in bottle and some still in tank. The wines are superb, about as complete a vintage that I can remember, Superbly expressive fruit on the nose and palate but not over the top. Rich yet classy with superb palate cores and structure and tannins that bode extremely well for the cellar but are balanced and in complete harmony with the wines.”, John Caplan.<br><br>The Southern Rhone is offering an embarrassment of riches and more and more wine lovers are beating down the door to get these outstanding wines. The King of the Southern Rhone is a gentleman by the name of Philippe Cambie who has now made more 100 pt Parker wine than any other winemaker. Mr. Cambie made the spectacular wine we have to offer today the 2010 Domaine Barville Chateauneuf du Pape ‘Optimum”. This is a special Cuvee that is only made in the greatest vintages and 2010 is one of the all-time greats. The world of wine yields great treasure from different parts of the world in a given year. This year there is huge demand for the spectacular Southern Rhone's from 2010. The great wines from the Southern Rhone are the Chateauneuf du Papes and people in the know are clamoring/lining up for the best Chateauneufs from this incredible vintage. Parker himself tastes the Southern Rhone and he has declared 2010 a GREAT VINTAGE with some producers commenting that their 2010's will eclipse their 2007's. Parker comments that, I can't remember a vintage so concentrated, powerful and rich...Weather conditions were near perfect. The 2010's will have significant aging potential, they have excellent tannic structures. The tannins however are sweet, supple with exceptional elegance and finesse. There is one massive problem with this great vintage. The crop was very small, 30 to 40% of all Grenache grapes were lost, the dominant grape varietal in the Southern Rhone. This was due to a viticulture problem, the French call coulure and millerandage which results in uneven berry size and different levels of grape maturity. If in a normal year let say 1000 cases of a wine are made, in 2010 only 500 to 700 cases were made. Availability of these great wines is going to be a definite problem. Only 400 cases of the Optimum were made, Parker’s WA loved the wine, 95 pts and being priced under fifty. This is a great buy. This house continues to dramatically improve the quality of its wines since Laurent Brotte, the grandson of the founder, Charles Brotte, took over management in 2000.<br><br>The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Domaine Barville Optimum (a cuvee only made in exceptional vintages) is a blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah. Aromas of Asian spices, soy, fig, kirsch liqueur, lead pencil shavings, plums, earth and pepper jump from the glass of this deep, full-bodied, concentrated 2010. There are approximately 400 cases of this wine, which should age effortlessly for 20 years.

Primary aromas of baked plums, cardamom, mulling spices and blackberry are followed by aromas of chocolate, vanilla beans and coffee. On the palate flavors of berry cobbler, plums and cocoa are followed by flavors of herbes de Provence, cedar and cigar smoke. The 2009 shows more firmness than the 2008 and will be at its best with two hours of decanting. We like to describe this wine as the “vin de garde” of the last three vintages of Merlot.
